Chain of Fools is a song written by Don Covay originally intended for the majestic Otis Redding. It is claimed that the song is an unauthorized rewrite of a gospel song named "Pains of Life" recorded by Rev E Fair & The Sensational Gladys Davis. Covay recorded his demo version of Chain of Fools while singing Gospel with his brothers and sisters. After listening to the demo Jerry Wexler, an Atlantic Records producer, chose to place the song with their rising female star Aretha Franklin in 1967 rather than with Redding as he felt a women’s voice would do more right to the song.

Hamilton Frederick Bohannon (born March 7, 1942), often credited and known professionally simply as Bohannon, is an American percussionist, band leader, songwriter and record producer, who was one of the leading figures in 1970s disco music.

He was born in Newnan, Georgia, and learned the drums at school. He began playing in local bands, one of which featured guitarist Jimi Hendrix, before graduating from Clark College, Atlanta with a degree in music and secondary education. After a brief period as a schoolteacher, he was recruited in 1964 as drummer in 13-year-old Stevie Wonder's touring band. He moved to Detroit in 1967, where he was employed by Motown as the leader and arranger of Bohannon & The Motown Sound, who provided backing for many of the label's top acts on tour, including Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, Diana Ross and the Supremes, The Four Tops and others.

When Motown moved from Detroit to Los Angeles, Bohannon stayed behind to form his own ensemble, featuring members of local band, The Fabulous Counts and including such musicians as Ray Parker Jr. and Dennis Coffey. He signed in 1972 with the Dakar label run by producer Carl Davis, and released his debut album Stop & Go in early 1973. This was followed by five more albums for the label over the next two years, on which he "perfected his formula of heavy, thudding bass accents and aggressive rhythms". Although several of his tracks were club hits, he had limited chart success. His first hit single, in 1974, was "South African Man", which reached no.78 on the Billboard R&B chart but had more success in the UK, where it reached no.22 on the pop chart. This was followed up in 1975 by "Foot Stompin Music" - his only record to reach the US Hot 100 - and "Disco Stomp", his biggest hit in the UK where it reached number 6.

In 1976, Bohannon signed to Mercury Records and two years later had one of his biggest successes with "Let’s Start The Dance," which reached no.9 on the R&B chart and no.7 on the disco chart. "Let's Start the Dance" featured singer Carolyn Crawford, whose subsequent albums Bohannon went on to produce. In 1981, a new mix of "Let's Start the Dance" was successful on the dance charts. In 1980 he established Phase II Records and continued to have minor hits on the R&B chart for the next three years, using new vocalists Liz Lands and Altrinna Grayson.He signed with MCA Records in 1984 and released several more albums. His last album, It's Time To Jam, was issued on the South Bound label in 1990.

Reference Point special event 'Down By The Sea' taking place on the beach in Asturias , Northern Spain together with our co-host Herminio Afonso. 
DJ's along with myself and George Arthur are our Spanish host Her Minio (Spain), along with Les Fisher (UK), Bjorn Kvalen (Norway), Gary Johnson (UK)and Mosk (Spain).
The event, as previous years is taking place at 'Hotel La Farola Del Mar Llanes' for two days.
Friday 9th and Saturday 10th September 2016, starting at 20:00 hrs until 03:30 on Friday, and on Saturday from 18:30 until 04:30 hrs
Here's a selection of some of the sort of music we'll be playing over the two days. Last two years events were excellent, so looking forward as always to this end of summer R P party.

As a regular follower of NOTHING BUT HOPE AND PASSION you might know that we fell in love with the Too Slow To Disco party and sampler series a while ago. Over the past two years Marcus Liesenfeld, the man behind the DJ alias continued to establish himself as an expert for smooth disco vibes, yachtrock and other forgotten pop delicacies from the golden age of analogue recordings. He just released the latest installment of the series, Too Slow To Disco Brasil, compiled by Ed Motta, a true expert of Brazilian soul and funk classics. Needless to say it became another truly satisfying summer soundtrack.

Today, we are thrilled to have DJ Supermarkt back at the NBHAP sound delivery service with a brand new and exclusive DJ-Mix. But this time it goes beyond the yacht club party and straight into space as the acclaimed DJ delivers a selection that’s even slower than any picks from his usual set-up. So, it totally makes sense to name this one Smooth Music For Your Next Space Travel as it’s the sort of sound the Arctic Monkeys would also play in their fictive moon-based Tranquility Base Hotel, right? In the wake of this brand new guestmix we also ask Mr. Liesenfeld a few questions about it and beyond.

War (a Discobody better way)

Norman Whitfield & Barrett Strong wrote the anti-Vietnam war protest song “War” in 1969 for the Motown artists The Temptations. But as Motown was worried about how the Temptations fans might receive such a political theme track, Whitfield re-recorded it with Edwin Starr on vocals. Starr’s intense rendition rocketed to #1 on the U.S Pop chart in 1970 and remained there for three weeks becoming his signature track and the most popular protest song ever recorded.

Frankie Goes To Hollywood revamped it on their 1984 multi-platinum debut album “Welcome To The Pleasuredome” produced by Trevor Horn. Their take is superbly electro-funk flavored though it lacks Edwin’s dramatic performance.

On this mix I reconstruct Frankies version adding Starr’s vocals and infusing it with extra rhythms and lots of twists. War’s aggressiveness and Hope’s better-way are described thru the rough bangin’ beats and the dubby groovy sound.

My Love Supreme (a Discobody supreme feeling)

Milton Hamilton is a mystery unsolved but the fact that he released in 1976 this immense underground classic is more than enough for me to totally respect him. “My Love Supreme” is a track where jazz-meets-disco-meets-funkybass in unexpected ways, engineered by the great disco producer Bob Blank.

On this edit I rearrange this quality floor material bringing a few new sounds, more breaks & more cowbells and double its time-length to satisfy the disco dancer. Enjoy!
