Nebulae returns with a very special release to start the year. Red Spider, a planetary nebula, located near the heart of the Milky Way, Northwest of the constellation Sagittarius, and approximately 5000 light-years away from Earth, is the namesake of this new cosmic trip. Glasgow-based producer Arctor (Tom Livingston), delivers 6 pieces for the occasion, where you may find a fine collection of dreamy textures, lush pads, intricate drum patterns and funky acid basslines, all seasoned with his acid jazz approach, a distinctive signature of the Tremors label head honcho.
Producing high tempo electro and techno with soulful Detroit flavoured sounds, always showing an almost sick obsession with twisting textures in order to squeeze them to their maximum expression, he has been steadily building his catalogue, dating back to September 2015, with his first release Genovese EP. Since then he has been releasing, not only his own material, but also remixing a number of different labels and has had his tracks played by artists such as Bicep, Oneman and CEM.
For Red Spider, the A-side explores three different sci-fi scenarios, all glued together with gritty pads, reaching maximum expression in Echopraxia. Here, Arctor shows an astonishing spectacle of stretching, chopping and melting back and forth its stuttering chords, like an alien spider would weave its web. On the flip, B-side presents a more eclectic palette of textures; going from the energetic Junk and travelling throughout the relentless banger Protect Your Head, until we arrive at our final destination: Memory Gene (DJ Friendly Version), a smooth rework of Livingston’s first track on his Tremors imprint, originally released back in 2017.

On February 25th, Palms Out will release the first in a series of compilations on cassette and digital. Titled plainly: "End Broken Windows", 100% of the proceeds of the series will go to charity in an effort to raise awareness about broken windows policing methods. Specifically, I hope this project contributes in some small way to spreading the word about the ways in which policing and prosecuting low-level offenses serves only as a way of terrorizing and traumatizing vulnerable populations, without achieving the intended goal of preventing violent crime. The theoretical premise of broken windows policing is fundamentally flawed, and woefully misguided -- there is no evidence that focusing police power on low level violations like sex work, loitering, minor vandalism, petit theft, minor drug offenses, etc. leads to any reduction in violent crime. The practice must end.

Each volume of the series will benefit a different charity doing work to counteract the effects of broken windows policing; all it really does is criminalize being black, trans, queer, young, unhoused, etc. The first volume will benefit the SBB National Sex Worker Bail Fund (swopbehindbars.org/donate). Sex workers are often intersectionally and inordinately affected by broken windows policing, and should never be forced to spend a single night in jail merely for exercising agency over their own bodies.

Musically and conceptually, this record is inspired by a place where broken windows policing is disproportionately felt: the subway/metro. I gave all of the artists the vague prompt to write music inspired by the NYC subway system -- and the results were expectedly varying. For this volume, I pursued artists who have been generally exploring midtempo dance music without focus on 4 to the floor drum patterns. The result was a collection of largely breakbeat-oriented songs, some with direct classic NYC & Detroit electro references, others with more melodic and euphoric UK hardcore inspiration, and others still that kind of split the difference between modern bass and Baltimore club (for lack of better descriptors).

Portuguese artist Lake Haze (Gonçalo Salgado) makes his return to Shall Not Fade with an album of spacious club music. Salgado is a key player in Portuguese musical exports, delivering masterful blends of techno grooves and retro melodies, and released his debut LP on E-Beamz in 2019. This second LP is titled Sun Rising On Concrete Landscapes.

This record explores further the atmospheric, slightly melancholic timbre to Salgado’s music. The use of reverb across the LP elucidates a sense of looking back to the past; ‘The Rave That Saved My Life’ sounds like echoes from a distant memory. It turns the sounds of the rave into something sombre, expansive and scattered with space age breaks. The title track feels dramatic, starting with melodic loops and scattered percussion but building into an untamed electro banger. The sci fi theme develops in a gorgeous soundscape of minimalist synth stabs in ‘She Took Me To Her Favourite Club’, while ‘Always By Your Side’ lingers in echoing percussion; the purposefully dated snare gives it some hints of an 80s ballad - deeply retro and deeply emotional. Salgado turns to more raw, club-ready sounds like the scattered breaks and electronic sound effects of ‘Neurotoxins Dancing On My Tongue’ or the punching kick and creeping acid trills of ‘Liquid Serotonin’. His skills as a producer are clear as he constructs the cavernous ‘Digital Petals’ with reminiscences of classic trance sounds. The expansive LP closes with ‘Emotional Encore’. It’s an industrial retro chugger with the dust of lofi sounds across it, eclectic and headsy.
