Dishing out his own part - and what a choice cut! - of the Bassiani gospel through the RYC waves this week, Georgian wizard Kancheli fires off a stupendous two-hour round of his immersive take on techno music, beautifully merging cinematic depth of field with hi-impact kinetic grooves. A former percussionist and Jazz head, Kancheli flexes the width of his musical palette to compelling effect, clashing full-blown functional DJ tools against abstract-adjacent flights to form his own dynamic yet hypnotic dance grammar away from normative constraints and ephemeral fads. The result is a bumpy, shape-shifting masterclass of a mix, bridging the gap betwixt proper floor-focussed explosiveness and more inward-gazing extrapolations. Nihad Tule is a DJ/Producer who likes to wear many hats, as solo artist (Nihad as well as Velež) and as part of collaborative projects Taken (with Elias Landberg) and NTTR-909 with Roseen (with a recent release on Tar Hallow). They’re all techno but each with a distinct flavour. The key ingredient they share is an unvacillating curiosity that typically has him experiment with his collection of hardware and allow himself to channel whatever weird sequences the moment provides. Much like his work behind decks, his sound is tailored for long-haul raving: a maverick mix of frugal bleeps and layer upon layer of rhythmic passion. His self-run label Sloboda is the place to look for the aforementioned. And here comes another. Bassiani Podcast 193 is all gas, no brakes. A turbocharged 75 minute techno paean from this long-serving clubland doyen.

Paris based DJ/Producer Benales is something of a veteran act in his native city of light. He’s played at Laurent Garnier’s Rex, the much-missed Concrete as well as La Station and Berlin staple Tresor. Since the 90s’ twilight years he’s crafted and perfected a raw and utilitarian stripe of techno that’s seen him share the spotlight with the likes of DVS1, Steve Bicknell and James Ruskin. Those references should give you an idea of his sound’s direction of travel, a deep order of ascetic basslines stripped of frills as the Motor City intended. And that goes for his productions too: with names like Construct Re-Form, Sino, Freddy K’s KEY Vinyl, Mitsubasa and Analog Solutions a few of the labels putting out his work (and there’s more in the making). His keen ear and feeling for crowd have earned him an eager audience over the years, and reputation as a go-to for organisers of legendary clubnights Europe-wide. If you’re curious and looking to let yourself fall under his spell, this latest dose of nefarious and wall-shaking beats has you covered. Somov Records head Ignez is up next with an unmissable techno number that’ll make you sweat. A younger self dropped the stuffy confines of his childhood on the Dutch coast and fled to Berlin as so many do, and there began to cultivate a sound that has placed him firmly among some of his talented and much talked about peers. The DJ/producer credits the seaside upbringing with instilling a deep respect for the rolling tides and endless sands, natural references that are deeply embodied in his hypnotising and immersive rhythms. His occasional return to home turf as resident of Amsterdam-based party series Eerste Communie has also played a significant role in his musical development and found him willing publishers in the likes of Token and SK_eleven, as well as a sparring partner in Berlin heavyweight Rødhåd (with whom he shares two EPs). It’s techno in purest form, bewitching loops that pulsate like those long ago shores. In that sound his ascetic beats are flanked by the most minimal detail and rely on raw percussive might to mesmerise his listener. A dancefloor portal to another world; transcendent stuff for sure. From small club settings to festivals on a larger scale Ignez brings a kind of magic that’s hard to turn a deaf ear to, Bassiani Podcast 220’s proof that he’ll pull those tricks at home too. A hour of virgin, mechanical beats that daze and enthral, a staunch reminder of techno’s visceral power and of why, for so many, it’s such a ruling passion.

Giorgi Kancheli is a Georgian producer and resident DJ at Bassiani who has been crucial in shaping the country’s club culture. Growing up in the dark and crumbling Tbilisi, in the 90’s, has greatly influenced his musical identity.
Kancheli’s professional relationship with music began with percussion and at the age of 17 he was already playing at the Tbilisi jazz festival. Soon after that, he got into electronic music and has now been an active DJ for over 15 years. In early 2010, Kancheli and his friends started the project ‘Stare at DJ’, which quickly became the main event of the country’s evolving club scene. Today, Kancheli is one of the most popular DJs in his hometown Tbilisi, headlining many major festivals in Georgia and performing at the industry’s most respected venues such as Berghain, Robert Johnson, Shelter, Dimensions or CTM Festival. Besides spinning the decks, Giorgi also writes and produces his own music. In spring 2020 his debut solo EP “Earthshaketrance” got released on Bassiani Records. Kancheli also co-runs the label Shin Records - a label focused on emerging Georgian producers

Dj Blitzed - Five Pella Madness

In Tbilisi, techno is a signal of change. Nowhere is this truer than Bassiani, the subterranean labyrinth where an oppressive armed police raid famously incited large-scale street protests against the government in 2018. In post-Soviet Georgia, Bassiani is a haven for the LGBTQ+ community – often heavily marginalised outside of the club’s concrete walls – as well as the young, progressive generation, who gather and dance for freedom. 

Bassiani resident Kancheli threw down a full-throttle, vinyl-only techno set to represent the club’s core sound.
