Three hours of garage, dubstep, grime, hardcore, jungle and techno recorded on a Sunday evening at 121 in Wellington for the Friendly Potential crew. At their request I tried to play with the energy of the old Sunday night sessions at FWD>>, and it was so fun. Old and new music side by side. Spinbacks at 2008 levels. 

Big thanks to everyone involved in this incredible trip to New Zealand and Australia, especially the Friendly Potential crew who made the whole thing possible. It was wonderful to play music again, and I hope to be back soon.

For this week’s episode we invited the local up and coming talent: mul/ANNA. Since she started DJ'ing a year ago, she has played numerous livestreams such as Operator, Future Intel and Maxi Radio. With her energetic track selection, she tries to find a balance between different genres like: ghetto house, electro and techno and is always ready to make you move. In October she made her club debut at the city’s notorious Pip, and even played there a second time last week to close the last event and make the floor shake one more time before lockdown. She is also part of collective hetgestrandeschip (HGS), which promotes up and coming talented artists through events and livestreams. Make sure to check them out!

And now for something completely different...

It is an obvious thing for me to state that I have a big heart for all things techno. It has been the genre which, over the years, has allowed me to express many things and to explore various regions, both artistic and geographically. However, it is by far the only genre which can count on my continued attention. When it comes to dancing and experiencing music on a dancefloor I find that, alongside techno, drum and bass is the one for me. The inherent energy and rhytmic structures of this style are what I appreciate the most. I've spent many nights in various venues listening to sets of high-octane breaks, with as a highlight a visit to London's legendary The End club, which used to be a true haven of drum and bass on Friday nights.

This month's Patreon mix is titled Memorandum, of which I have posted this excerpt on Soundcloud. It is my tribute to drum and bass, not via a selection of classic tracks but through a observation of contemporary breakbeat science. I used to dj drum and bass for a while and have kept those records safe, but I felt as if an exploration of today's sounds was more appropriate. There is a lot of creative music out there, invoking amazing sonic landscapes. A lot of drum and bass producers are very talented sound designers, and true experts at creating a landscape which in my opinion can be both alienating and extremely danceable. Please enjoy.

Memorandum - Excerpt: Patreon mix for January 2022

Amsterdam-based @jasminhoek is a DJ and radio host renowned for her eclectic, percussion-rich sound. Immersed in a vivid spectrum of bass, breaks, dubstep, acid and techno, she also readily embraces the weird, with a knack for uncovering the most compelling of unexpected oddities.

As both a hard-working and in-demand selector, Jasmín has taken the stage at an array of much loved venues and events across the world, including the likes of the Dekmantel, Dekmantel Selectors and Rewire Festivals, De School, Garage Noord, Tresor, Griessmuehle, and New York’s Bossa Nova Civic Club. In recent times, she’s spent time honing her skills in the studio, with her first two track releases being featured on VAs from Dekmantel and Martyn’s 3024 imprint.

Jasmín's Patterns of Perception 93 feels simultaneously free-spirited and precise, with its energy and emotion combining to perfectly capture her distinctive sound. Buoyant, expressive rhythms find cathartic release amongst flashes of luminescent energy. Warm, playful atmospheres are actually intensified by pensive, reflective interludes. Past inspirations find reinvigoration alongside feelings and reflections from today.

Patterns of Perception 93 - Jasmín

@shannensp has made big moves in quick time. After teenage years immersed in the sound system culture of nights like SubDub in Leeds, she moved to London and started working with Hyperdub, produced with hosted on NTS, and then took off as a DJ. She has a sound rooted in the black music that exists around the edges of traditional house and techno. Be it kuduro, dancehall, bass, kwaito, hip hop or whatever else, it is always right at the cutting edge. 

As has always been the case with her mixes, this week's podcast is another carefully assembled collection of diasporic sounds. There are high-pressure percussive workouts and juke rhythms, heavy Afrocentric techno sounds and flurries of crashing breakbeats that lead into acid-dancehall. It's an intense selection that could only be held together by a DJ with some serious chops.

mul/ANNA is a DJ from the Hague, The Netherlands. Her urge to make people dance is fueled by an insatiable appetite for bass and percussion infused in genres such as breakbeat, jungle and hard-hitting electro. 

It’s important to her that people feel safe and fully can be themselves on the dance floor, that’s why she started her own mix and event series BUMBU. Inspired by her Indonesian heritage, BUMBU is her vehicle and platform where she invites likeminded friends and peers such as Mahabe, Jelly, KI/IP and PHIA.

this recording is from a performed dj set from mul/ANNA & Axefield during the pos weekender on Krackfree Soundsystem.

after finding each other musically during a special Who's Susan RRFM set in het Meterhuis this summer, Axefield and mul/ANNA decided they weren't done playing their fierce yet delicate dj sets together. their jungle special at RRFM was full of bassy surprises and ventures into many other 160+ bass music songs, anthems and ballads. to this day mul/ANNA can't forget the famous 'amen break', which continues to echo in her head every minute of the day, while Axefield won't stop rewinding every song he loads up for which he's seeked professional help. 

it was during this dj identity crisis that the loving community of pos reached out with an offer: to close off after the legendary Mia Koden on the equally as legendary Krackfree Sounsystem in their community space during ADE. Both mul/ANNA and Axefield were stunned, overwhelmed with disbelief, and instantly cured of their jungle music-induced health complications. ffcourse, "yes" is what they said, and the rest is history.
