This week we are very pleased to welcome Timothy J. Fairplay to the series. This revered artist has been a feature of electronic music now for nearly two decades. He started out playing electro and ghettotech in the early 00’s which included his time in Cold Wave band Battan, as well as the super duo Asphodells with Andrew Weatherall, as well as his solo work. His mark was left at clubs like The Good Room, Fabric and Robert Johnson as well as festivals like DT Camp, Convenanza and IFM. His recognizable production style is nestled on labels like Pinkman, Mechatronica, Brokntoys, Knekelhuis as well as Andrew Weatherall’s legendary label Rotters Golf Club. He was the driving force behind the cult label Crimes Of The Future and last year started his new label Dungeon Module with his album ‘A Snowstorm In The Tropics’ as well as releasing the album ‘The Fast Lane’ on Weapons Of Desire the same year. Timothy has a number of records coming out this year starting this month with his new album ‘Free Andromeda’ on Höga Nord. Lock in for an hour from on of the masters in the scene.

We zoom in on the local Amsterdam scene this week and welcome DJ Merlín to the series. He is the programmer of the lauded local unit Kraft und Licht. Whether it's deep in the Amsterdam forest or in the hull of an old freight ship, they bring together the right ingredient of audience and artists that include Byron Yeates, D. Tiffany, our friend Aleksa Alaska, Sansibar, and many others. He boasts a major in composition and sounds design from the Arts Academy in Utrecht and regularly blesses the K&L line-ups with his edgy and silky smooth selections. With over ten years of experience as a DJ and a string of quality releases on Dubiks and Kraft und Licht Records, he knows how to bring magic to the dancefloor. We are excited to hear his upcoming releases in 2023 as he is one to keep an eye on. Lock in for an hour-long selection with some of his own upcoming music sprinkled in.

Galactic Funk Podcast 110 - DJ Merlín

A new instalment of our Mixtape series with a psychedelic selection by the hand of Anatolian weapons.

Athenian musician Aggelos Baltas has been producing music for almost a decade, with his Fantastikoi Hxoi project and the more recent Anatolian Weapons, this last one conceived as a way to bring together his influences in krautrock and EBM - two seemingly mismatched concepts- with the polyrhythmic percussion and wailing tones of Greek folk music serving as their unlikely bonding agent. 

His most recent publication under the Anatolian Weapons moniker, the excellent 'To The Mother Of Gods', is an album made in collaboration with Greek folk musician and composer Seirios Savvaidis. Savvidis contributed stems of ten songs, which Baltas deconstructs and rearranges with an appreciation of the ancestry of their lineage and of the deceptively ancient eerie, droning qualities inherent in the style. Baltas shares that this album was one of these projects that flows very naturally; he felt so inspired by Seirios' original material that this is one of his favourite projects to date.

This mix, Ghost Dancers, it's [as always] a leftfield, psychedelic mix striving to combine the organic and electronic.

Anatolian Weapons - Ghost Dancers, June 2019

“Resonant Body”, the third studio album by Octo Octa (Maya Bouldry-Morrison), is her most spiritual and nature--connected work. Maya recorded the songs at her cabin in New Hampshire inorder to channel the resonance of the forest, the beauty of the river, and the energy from the rituals she conducts within it. The album was written and produced at the end of December 2018—after a year of near constant touring—in order to process through art an intense and magical year of change. 

“Resonant Body” is the second release on T4T LUV NRG, the label co-run by Maya and her partner Eris Drew. It draws on the same themes of togetherness (“Power To The People”), embodiment (“Spin Girl, Let’s Activate!”), love (“Deep Connections”), healing (“My Body Is Power”) and survival (“Can You See Me?”) that animated her acclaimed “For Lover’s EP” (Technicolour, 2019). The album’s art was created by Maya’s partner Brooke, who painted two canvases after a magical day-trip Brooke, Eris, and Maya took earlier this year on the “Sweet Trail” in New Hampshire. 

Octo Octa’s live performances and DJ sets are known for calling the dancers to move their bodies to a message of love. The dancefloor can be for all of us. It is a communal space that can provide healing when respected, where the dancers can actualize if they can let go and embrace themselves and each other. When we engage with music that heals, through dance or deep listening, we use an ancient technology for its original purpose. Octo Octa believes in the healing power of her music. “Resonant Body” transforms her life and intentions into healing art. 

50% of the profits from the album will be donated to the Sylvia Rivera Law Project (SRLP), which works to guarantee that all people are free to self-determine their gender identity and expression, regardless of income or race, and without facing harassment, discrimination, or violence.
