Summer is knocking on our door, and life is slowly moving in a direction we remember being normal. Something new will come out of this whole situation. Partying while practicing social distancing? Virtual partying? These options don't sound exciting but that will be our reality in upcoming months, and especially the latter is here to stay. Thankfully, good old listening to mixes online is stronger than ever. These are the mixes that we enjoyed the most in May. A jaw dropping ambient mix from the incredibly talented Kevin Richard Martin - The Bug - here to celebrate the release of Sirens on Lawrence English’s Room40 label. Tracks from pioneers such as Eliane Radigue, Einsturzende Neubauten and Alice Coltrane sit alongside modern architects such as Burial, Autechre, Rainforest Spiritual Enslavement and Nivhek. Later in this mix we also hear some exclusive unreleased material he has been working on as King Midas Sound.

Marionette Records label boss Ali Safi aka @grimwig contributes a truly stunning mix of some of his favourite recent releases as well as upcoming material from the label.

“All this music means a lot to me and been listening to it quite a bit in the last couple of years - some of it on Marionette (released/upcoming) and some by artists I truly admire. It's all associated with strong visuals and personal memories - I travelled to quite a few places listening to this and it takes me back to the Scandinavian fauna and flora and the Canadian Rockies. I think of this music as quite vivid in general - like rushing through a gallery of expressionistic paintings."

Starting off with an exert from Louise Landes Levi’s IKIRU album from 2018 expressing bravery and wonder of the monarch butterfly species on the verge of endangerment, we travel through Richard Scott and Guiseppe Ielasi’s electroacoustic compositions to the closing track from Ernest Hood’s recently reissued visceral voyage “Neighbourhoods”. From here we are rewarded an insight into the upcoming releases from Ali’s @marionettelabel as well as a cut from Benjamin Kilchhofer and Michael Anklin’s 2019 release Moto Perpetuo. Later on, we hear Kali Malone’s Spectacle of Ritual fall behind waves of Cluster’s classic 81’ release Curiosum. A breathtaking sonic journey that instantly demands another listen.

recorded at live at Charlie & Joss Invites.... four and half hours on a Sunday night in the brilliant Garage Noord. I always have a wicked time whenever I play in Amsterdam, but the venue, crowd, sound, friends from home and special Sunday night vibe made this one something else.... x

rRoxymore’s music exists in the murky territory between house and techno. It is music you can dance to, but that never seems to be its primary intention. Shifting synth sequences bring rhythm, exotic percussion bring worldly feelings and her rugged and deconstructed drum machines bring inventive grooves. The Berlin based French artist herself calls it “mercy-less house” and has put most of it out on Don’t Be Afraid, including her Face to Phase album later last year, which was an album full of intriguing and exploratory sound scapes.
 
In the past, rRoxymore has played percussion in a rock band, played hip hop and rare groove and soundtracked art installations, so she brings that widescreen understanding of groove to this week’s mix. It’s a leftfield selection of humid and tropical rhythms that dangle like vines in a jungle before morphing into broken and syncopated beats with a heavy low end. It’s compelling, stripped back rhythm music that seems to takes cues from UK funky, EBM, disco, techno and plenty more besides.

After opening our Open Air Stage on Friday, we also asked him to play a second set on our Ambient Stage on Saturday - and he did it with just so much elegance and grace as we know from his dancefloor sets.

Planet Euphorique is the name of @d-tiffany’s label, but also a perfect summation of her sound: musically she reworks rave, euphoria, trance, electro, breakbeat and techno into all out emotional onslaughts that get hands in the air and chests swelling with joy. The Canadian - who also runs the xpq? label - has always got things done on her own terms, from running parties in her own house in Vancouver to making dance music with the gear she had previously used as part of a band via setting up her own women-focused Intersessions DJ school.

This week she treats us to an extra special two hour selection that will take you to the heart of a rave in your front room. It’s a mix that bristles with life, from dusty and teary-eyed breakbeats that are shrouded in nostalgia to more clipped and kicking techno. The mixing is tight and urgent and after initially serving up plenty of lush moments of melody and IDM introspection, it grows all the more direct and unhinged later on.

after he had followed the invitation to play at one of our events almost exactly one year ago, now carmel delivers kfpnyx 019 harmonic as usual with a warm and groovy touch. apart from that, the leipzig based dj and producer is also running rand musik recordings and co-runs the labels bitterfeld and qc records.

the kfpnyx mix series includes many sub kinds of electronic music, especially rough and melodic techno, house, electro, breakbeat and ambient. for this purpose we want to involve our residents, friends of the crew and selected guests.
