The new episode of our podcast series comes from @lowgravitysound: Technology and imperfection, raw and processed, so many concepts that lie at the core of Futurepast identity.

Low Gravity trained his mixing and production skills in the London underground scene, before he brought his sound to Rome where he co-founded @radiocircolo and Collettivo Sonico. As an enthusiast of electroacoustics and experimental music, he deploys his knowledge to sculpt the sound, and fuse elements from ambient textures, experimental and hypnotic rhythms.

The mix itself features tracks from essential pioneers Éliane Radigue and Suzanne Ciani, Brian Eno, revered sound designers and composers like Tetsu Inoue, Alva Noto, Pete Namlook or Robert Rich, and new coming talents like LF58, Grand River, and of course Low Gravity himself, with an unreleased track.

Please introduce yourself
- My name is Johanna, I produce and play electronic music, both DJ and live performer. Moved to Sweden last year after 13 years in Berlin, and recently started up a creative space here in an old car garage, where I have my hair salon, host music events, exhibitions, flea markets and workshops etc
 
Can you describe your relationship to music throughout your life?
- It's always been there but changing a lot during the years. It has however always been spiritual to me in a non-religious way, music has always been a great way of communicating my inner thoughts and emotions that can't be described with words.

How did Berlin influence the way you make and listen to music?
- It wasn't so much about Berlin itself, it was more about moving away from everyone I knew and everything that I did in Sweden, and moving to a new (and at the time cheaper) place, where I could afford and take the time to be working with music and be alone. I only DJ'd locally in Berlin for the first couple of years before I started touring, so I wasn't really influenced by the "berlin technoscene" too much. I was mostly amazed about the way people partied for days at a time, but for me partying too much meant having no energy left to be creative in the studio. 13 years went by very fast I'll tell you that. One thing that I do miss in Berlin are the very many record stores to buy vinyl, but Malmö has some really good ones too actually (Bolero and Rundgång for example), and to go out partying daytime. And being out for too long.

How does it feel to be back in Malmo now, both in terms of music and life in general?
- Oh my god, i'm so happy to be here. The crew I've found here have already thrown a few open-airs, a couple of club nights where we've done everything from decor to DJ. It's so inspiring! Berlin is filled to the brim with so many people doing the same thing, which can also mean that it's very easy to get ungrateful/jealous of your DJ-friends which is kind of terrible actually. 

How did you approach your Patience release, and how did that differ from your usual approach to making music?
- As I wrote to Luca who did the artwork, I was making the music at a time when everything around me was moving and changing in directions that I didn't choose myself. It was mid-pandemic, I'd lost all of my income,  and had decided to leave the city that I had lived in for 13 years (and loved at that time), not knowing if I'd be able to continue making music or not. Going to the studio to work on this was one of my few comforting things I could do, and sitting with it gave me a nice pause from that intense Weltschmerz I was feeling at the time.

Do you have a personal favorite longform piece of music?
- So many, I mean isn't that what DJ-mixes are for as well? A really well thought through DJ mix is something I appreciate so so much. And I want to mention everything from John Carroll Kirby, especially the Patience release. So good!

Johanna Knutsson Mix for The Lot Radio - March 22, 2022

For our first entry in the PPRZ Podcast series, we have a mix from half of @pprzrecords, Vancouver's @djhockey! DJ Hockey approaches techno by intermingling layers of contrasting elements. Defining characteristics for his selections are thick, encompassing atmospheres and moods on the introspective side. These sounds are often paired with nods to the Midwest wrapped in a single session, crafting a journey through spacious and full beats. A consistent overarching theme of DJ Hockey’s style in selecting and producing is incorporating a heavy hit of psychedelia in their projects.

This mix is a slow burning trip full of beautiful melody, floating atmospheres designed to captivate the listener and dissociate into another world for one hour.

PPRZ Podcast 1 - DJ Hockey

Earth Trax aka Bartosz Kruczyński is a Warsaw-based producer and DJ who has proven his ability to effortlessly navigate the electronic music continuum with style and grace. 
In 2020, he released his first two albums - LP1 and LP2, with media calling his work as music for "bittersweet dance floor moments". 
His emotional, artfully conceived productions have been released on Shall Not Fade, Phonica Records, Growing Bin or Into The Light Records to name a few. 
Other records scheduled for 2022 are an album for a multidisciplinary hub - Lapsus Records and an EP for AUS Music.

Hypnotic Groove Mix #383 - Earth Trax

Futurepast mix 12 is a finely crafted collage of contemporary ambient gems and more unexpected oldies from an influential character of Brussels techno scene.

Having recently launched his own label efja, he is known, with his partners of the Metropolis crew, to be the ambassador of a richly textured sound, focused on progressive grooves and immersive textures.

Firmly based on solid references such as the timeless collaboration between Alva Noto and Ryuichi Sakamoto, this mix features atmospheric sceneries and polar waves as well as skeletal rhythms and liquid dubs.
