A cheap, clean, and manageable energy technology called Fusion, which has the potential to end hunger, pollution, and economic and political strife in third world countries, and to provide limitless gifts to humanity (such as the end of nuclear waste, the end of acid rain, a solution to global warming, as well as practical space flight) has been discovered and understood, but... because there is no political will to fund additional engineering research into the practical application of this technology, the budget for this program has ended, and the people, equipment, and laboratories have been dismantled, and the most important technological advancement to the progress of mankind has been halted, while the country as a whole is distracted by a middle-east boondoggle and the ancillary problems that it brings to secure an ever dwindling supply of traditional energy: oil.
