When I realised that every word is just an extension of a previous that has met its end, it seemed inconceivable to me that anyone could ever reach a place where they felt content with language. That is to say language as an emotive driving force, language as a pendulum that swings between a predetermined pool of words, ones that morph in shape and sound but rarely in meaning. Naturally, this meant that every word also has its upper and lower limits, suspended like a tightrope between the factions of time. For example, the word ‘happy’ has a limited life span until it inevitably becomes ‘ecstatic’; ‘ecstatic’ only exists insofar until it transforms into ‘euphoric’. Imagine if we consistently reduced the ranges of these words until we only had a few to describe everything around us. Which would you choose?

Egyptian-Australian based producer and DJ Moktar is one of those artists for which language never suffices. Instead, his music requires spiritual and personal attention as you find yourself flooded with a wave of visceral emotion through the lens of leftfield techno and IDM. The same goes for his third musical offering, a self-titled EP coming via Mall Grab's Steel City Dance Discs.

Following his inaugural single 'Silk' and then 'Lemon' is no easy feat, but the emotionally-charged 'Drip' is ripe with warm pads and a quavering gentle high-synth line that highlights Moktar's versatility, not only as a producer but also as an artist. 'Drip' is imbued in the same sensibility as the rest of the EP, one which celebrates his Arabic heritage and culture after having spent years facing stereotyping and racism in so-called Australia. Defined by his beautifully crafted intersections between future club music and traditional Arabic instrumentation and sampling, Moktar represents an artist who has now reached a point where he feels comfortable moving around freely, physically and spiritually. 'Drip' is a welcome pause amongst the organised chaos of the rest of the high-energy EP. It is a call to reflect on the moods and feelings that he has so carefully embedded in the EP, and an invitation to follow your true self.

Nathan Micay introduces a new label into the Schvitz family: Eternal Schvitz, a home for re- issues of those most rare slabs of wax. The inaugural release offers a sampler of coveted tunes from the fabled Baby Blue Records run by Chris Simmonds between1990-1993. Almost impossible to find, these tunes have become a thing of discogs legend, offering up a snapshot into the label's short but memorable run. Lovingly re-stored straight from the DAT tapes of yore. To fight the evil no-ID-DJ forces currently at work, every release will be providing 60% of the cut to the artists and ensuring their credits are front and centre. The remaining 40% of profits will go to aequa, a Berlin-based collective with a focus on empowerment of women, trans and non- binary folks through gatherings for interpersonal exchange. Schvitz is Love. Schvitz is communal.

A Fresh transmission from Perth producer Guy Contact has arrived! After his debut outing on Bitterfeld in 2017 we were hooked and chasing more. His follow up 'Liminal Space' satisfies cravings and exceeds expectations.

The crisp five-tracker is rich with plasmic deep house, pounding bass and brain-tingling electronics. The title track is a writhing techno-house mutant, brimming with warped, space age textures and a striking beat. On "Holding Bay" and "Kawai K4 " Guy puts the brakes on and enters a deeper terrain. Extraterrestrial acid licks and murky drums a-plenty with the latter giving a proper nod to new-age music. On the flip, "Phase Value" dumps the clutch and gets things going again with it's spiralling synths, synthesised kicks and classy chords paying tribute to 90's trance moods. Hypno-house bomb "Void If Removed" rounds out the EP with euphoric pads and a solid, crunchy groove underwritten by a stomping kick drum.

Toby Tobias has been at the coalface of the British leftfield house movement for many years now, releasing, without fuss or fanfare, on an array of fine releases for labels such as ESP Institute, Delusions Of Grandeur, Rekids and many more.

Tobias opens up Futureboogie’s 2020 account with ‘Trippy Steve’, a trio of spaced out dance cuts that come from the DAT vaults (Trippy Steve & Cosmic Slang recorded in 2001, Deo Mort laid down in 2014), which come complete with a remix from Fantastic Man.

‘Trippy Steve’ blends energetic and raw disco rhythms with wide eyed and transcendental deepness, a powerful dubwise bassline that really drives the energy here.  Australia’s Fantastic Man (Superconcious Records), keep’s the proceedings lively on his remix here, a rasping b-line and rolling beats thrust forward at a pace, dubbing out the vocal samples and opening up the bass for some wiggy acid business.

‘Cosmic Slang’ charmingly chugs with reverb soaked piano chords and ascending synths, whilst ‘Deo Mort’ is loose and carefree, with a myriad of classic samples cropping up amongst fragmented beats and a cap doffed towards the Sheffield bleep sound of old.

FINA White kicks off 2021 by notching up a fantastic 10th EP, this time from BufoBufo. The hotly tipped UK artist serves up four more of his thrilling electro, rave and hardcore fusions that cannot fail to blow up any spot.

The co-founder of Ritual Poison Records and Batrachian Records has been fuelling sweaty dance floors with his productions since 2017. They are always physical and emotional affairs that have come on the likes of Furthur Electronix, Tone Dropout, Kouncil Cuts, Partout and Ecstasy Garage Disco, and now he comes through with another treasure trove of top tunes.

Endless Rhythm has a quick house beat with muted acid lines, jazzy chords and a nagging vocal sample that all adds up to an impassioned and soulful groove. Lily Pad is more unfixed with a prickly 303 darting about the mix next to balmy pads and a prickly percussive line that demands you move. It's Changing has a deep but driving bassline and another heartfelt vocal sample that adds a real sense of melancholy to the futuristic and soulful house beats. Night Visions close out with some dusty old breakbeats that keep you on your toes and lost in a cinematic world of sci-fi pads.
