Being considered an “electronic musician” it seems kind of ironic that I've always felt strongly connected to the sound of acoustic instruments. Maybe it was my parents strong interest in traditional Danish folk music during my childhood, or maybe it's just a basic human condition to feel at ease with the broad dynamic range and direct sound of acoustically performed music.

Anyway, I didn't hesitate one second when I was invited to participate in a songwriting workshop, focusing on the Nordic musical tone of Scandinavia, arranged by the Danish composers organization DJBFA.

The workshop was set to take place on the small scenic island of Fanø on the rugged Danish west coast, with participants coming primarily from the folk scene including high profiled musicians from Sweden, Finland & Norway. With childhood memories of bright and carefree summers spent at my grandparents old house on the island, this seemed like a no-brainer.
 
My role was to introduce the participants to the possibilities of combining the techniques of electronic music composition with the use of acoustic instruments and traditional songwriting.

The experience was overwhelming: First day I recorded all the newly written compositions and instruments of the participants over a span of 14 hours, ending up in the local village hall where the ”Godtfolk Festival” was to start the next day and beer taps had to be tested.
Here I also got a taste of the ”Sønderhoning” dance - a proud local tradition that can be traced back to the 17th century and apparently can't be danced anywhere else in the world.

The next morning I got up early and tried to get an overview of the huge piles of recordings from the day before, so I could decide what to use in my new piece. I had until 3 pm to create an entirely new piece, which was to be performed at the local church of Sønderho at 4 pm so quick decisions had to be made and no time for regrets.

The result is a track I've called “Stjernernes Lys” (“Light of the Stars”) taken from one of the the lyrics written by Jørgen Dickmeiss, who's also singing in the end of the song.
