James Beardmore aka Cares is a Toronto-based musician and experimental producer from Birmingham. Influenced by his multidisciplinary background in improv and visual art as well as by his teenage experiences with punk bands in the UK, the artist resorts to audio sources such as field recordings, samples, and both hardware and software instruments for his inspired and skillful sound design that touches at the same time industrial, ambient/noise, and club-oriented music. Later this month, Cares will appear with the 10-track cassette called Nerve Day on the multi-disciplinary electronic label ZABRA, started in 2018 and based in Lisbon, and focused on the interaction between music and performative and digital art.

Cares previously appeared on labels like Collusion, & Options, and early this year on Table Scraps, while also being an active member of the global collective No Exist together with Okay Vivian, Ylang Ylang, and Così e Così. In the course of his prolific career, that brought him to cross path with diverse music communities and pivotal figures like Suzanne Ciani, Lee Ranaldo, and Rabit just to name a few, the artist has been continuously evolving and shaping his production in a multifaceted, morphing entity, both on the stage and in the studio. His latest endeavor, recorded last year in Toronto, is but the latest example of versatility and mastery of sound elements converging in fragmented, unpredictable, and emotional pieces of abstract electronics.

Reportedly inspired by the role of the human nervous system in "interpreting and creating reality", Nerve Day meddles with evocative sound textures, gnawing noise, eroded kickdrums, and bursting electrical discharges in an attempt to shape a free-form, non-conceptual representation of the relationship with one's self and external reality as well as the interactions between conscious and unconscious drives. The final outing is a mammoth audio chimera that can be as elusive and tranquil as it can be eventful and unforgiving, much close to an unfiltered stream of consciousness in the form of pressure airwaves.

Nerve Day will be published in the form of a limited-edition, 40-page art publication designed by Cares himself, together with custom-packaged cassettes mastered by Graham Galbraith-Nolan. The release is set for next Friday, March 26, and you can pre-order your copy at this link. Today, we are presenting on our channels the third track of the record, called There Weren't, and possibly the most aggressive among the others thanks to its abrupt sound explosions, distorted kicks, and detuned synth stabs that suddenly switch off and mutate in the most tender and ethereal melody. Zhou Huang Zhou peered into the structural weaving of the materials of the small temple, studying the symbols inscribed on the walls and the neat patterns of the roof...Between the rows of statues of deities, Taoist priests dressed in gray clothes walked back and forth and talked to the parishioners...
A 30-year-old programmer from Neihu came to the Temple of Joyful Grace to undergo a Guanlingshu ritual - during which he intended to enter the spirit world - a place where gods, ghosts, and deceased ancestors are believed to live...
The totality of the beliefs and traditions of his native land fueled the idea that every person - past, present, and future has a home in the spiritual world, and the state of each room is symbolically linked to a tangible aspect of life...

This was his third appearance on the doorstep of the world beyond perception - two other attempts were unsuccessful...For some reason, the spirits did not answer his call...But this time Zhou felt inexplicable confidence that today the door of the inner alchemy will be revealed to them...Taking a deep breath, he entered the temple...

The great hall was lit with many candles, the floors were covered with carpets with mantras and mandalas...In the сenter, in front of the inner sanctuary, there were rows of chairs, on each back of which a red piece of cloth hung...The monk urged the faithful to take courage when entering the spirit world...A small shiver ran down Zhou's spine, but there is no other way and he takes one of the chairs...

The monk's voice was loud, but soft at the same time:

- You will return from the spirit world, - he said, - but many of you will not return the same...Take these red scraps of cloth and blindfold ... Focus on the rhythm of my instrument and free your mind from worldly worries and do not rationalize what you see, do not involve the mind in this process...

Having said this, he began to recite a mantra and play on a small wooden drum...Three other monks slowly emerging from different corners, echoed him and their voices merged in that flow...

A house appeared before Zhou's inner gaze, without hesitation he opened the door and found himself in the living room, where he saw an old man sitting on the sofa...

- Greetings, Zhou, my name is Ug... Finally, you've reached this state...Look what a mess in this room, we need to streamline your life, help me remove everything that interferes with the circulation of energy...Pay attention to how much you brought a lot of junk here, every object takes attention and energy, prevents you from focusing on important aspects...

Zhou nodded silently and they began to swap objects, creating corridors along which, as if through veins, a golden snake of energy began to move...At some point, Ug raised his hand up, symbolizing that they needed to go up to the second floor...The staircase arose by itself...There was one door on the upper floor, closed with a large padlock...Zhou looked inquiringly at the South...

- This is the door of your heart...What big lock did you hang on it, ask yourself who are you hiding from? Here, take this key and open it, let love live inside...

The silver key turned softly in the lock, the door opened and a radiant stream of the sound of this mix filled the space...

Removing the blindfold from his eyes, Zhou was no longer the same...

The world needs PROF355IONA1 H31P. Now, more than ever. These three synth-heads have dusted off the old analog sequencers and drum machines to put together some post-Berlin School sculptures.

Population Engine begins with a liquid synth ostinato that is soon joined by an electronic tom pattern. It reminds the listener of the time before techno was codified and regimented into strict 16-bar sequences, when toms drove the dance floor and the drum kit wasn’t limited to just kick, hat and snare. Psychedelic melodic whistles appear, only occasionally contenting themselves with staying in the same key as the bassline. The hi-hats open up, the cowbell announces that it exists, and now we’re driving across an electro landscape. We can’t stop here, this is electro country. The synth clouds are spreading out … looks like rain. The drums are fading into the background as the storm gathers power. It feels like we’re approaching the end of something … the synths are changing the climate … the center cannot hold.

Population Engine 以合成器潺流而出，電子節拍銜續而入。使聽眾憶起techno被編入嚴格16 小節序列前的年代：中鼓在舞池中穿梭，鼓組也不僅限於大鼓、踏鈸或小鼓。迷幻的口哨旋律出現，與貝斯時而重疊，又交錯。踏鈸打開，牛鈴開始大聲宣告，我們正飛梭於電子音景之中。這是屬於電子的國度，而我們不宜久留。聲音如雲般散開……又化為雨。隨著暴風凝聚，鼓聲緩緩隱沒於背景中。我們正往盡頭靠近……聲音正在改變氣候……而其中心已逐漸失控。  

The second track, Upgradeable Assistant, also begins with a synth sequence, which is joined by a second. The notes are woozy, struggling to maintain coherence. Behind them, a steady rhythm is emerging. Rather than conventional drums, we have repeated hammered triggers and clicks. Something here feels slightly more optimistic than the opening track. Something is struggling to grow. A jenga tower of pitched notes and rusty drum clacks is swaying slightly as it accumulates more and more layers, but the structure is resilient enough. The algorithm is sound. The construction stands firm even as certain notes lose their tonal center. The pitches resolve towards a central point. The upgrade is complete.

第二首Upgradeable Assistant以節拍序列開場，即便在迷濛的聲音中也維持其連貫，穩定的節奏從身後浮現。不同與以往的鼓聲，這裡重複敲擊、鎚擊，扣下扳機。這兒比開場曲稍稍樂觀些。有些什麼正在蠢蠢欲動。一個由銳利音符與鏽化鼓聲建構的高塔隨著層數堆升而開始搖晃，但結構有著足夠的彈性。聲音即是演算的方法。即使某些音符失去了調性中心，結構仍然牢固。音調朝向中心點進化，升級就緒。

This is a soundtrack; close your eyes - you can see the film. While the camera strains, image wobbling, making the most of a lack of light, there are riots in the streets; armored vehicles blasting water cannons; a teenager in a bandana kicks a tear gas canister back toward the line of cops. Natural disasters; a wall of water washing cars from the street; half-finished skyscrapers collapse; cracks opening in the earth’s surface. 

這像是電影配樂，在閉上雙眼之際便能清楚看見這部電影。鏡頭過濾、晃動，將所有的光去除。街上的抗爭、武裝載具發射加壓水砲、穿戴頭巾的少年將催淚瓦斯踢回警察防線之中。天災襲來：雨牆沖刷街上的汽車，未完成的摩天大樓接續倒塌，將地表鑿出了個大洞。

Like a soundtrack, you can feel the music abruptly shifting from one scene to another, unheralded, uncued, shifting direction like a school of fish or a mob of protestors. At first it’s just the drums spattering rapidly forward, traditional snares and kicks alongside muted dull cymbals and rattling pans and trash can lids. Then a raucous, enraged saxophone, maddened beyond belief and REFUSING to shut up, suddenly appears running alongside the drums. Rhythmically, the two are locked, though they still both feel like they’re being played while falling down a long flight of stairs.

你可以感受到聲音瞬間切換至另個場景，似電影配樂般 - 無預警、毫無保留的的轉換方向，如魚群或抗爭群眾。最初只是鼓聲快速的擊濺，傳統的小鼓、大鼓伴隨銅鈸、鏗鏘作響的鍋碗及垃圾桶的蓋子。然後，喧囂盛怒的薩克斯風捉了狂，和鼓聲一同奔馳 — 極力抗拒、無法停歇。 雖在節奏上彼此緊密同步，但感覺起來卻像是他們演奏於 — 蹣跚跌落的瞬間。

When it’s just the drums and the sax, angry beyond reason, there’s still a very tangible emptiness, a space within the sound. And when (Z)erpents want to fill that space, they do – with big fudgy slices of guitar. What the guitar has in common with the drums and the sax is an element of relentlessness, although this is expressed as long cloudy drones rather than furious action. It’s a threatening undertone like a dark cloud that refuses to break into unavoidable rain.

當只有鼓和憤怒的薩克斯風時，聲音中仍有些明顯的空間和留白，一層又一層、毛烈成片的吉他和弦便將整個空間填滿。吉他與鼓、薩克斯風一樣充滿混亂強烈的元素，但並不是憤怒的方式，而是以雷雲層般厚重的遠長延音，像是為即將襲來的暴雨所下的警示：你將無法避免。
