CHRIZPY CHRIZ makes his triumphant return to VALE with an other worldly array of mind distorting bass music. The RETRIEVING LIGHT EP is a collection of dark and intense sound design experiments that eventually find a luminous escape. BROKEN FUNCTION, the forgotten cousin of ‘Scattered’ from CHRIZPY CHRIZ’s previous EP, is a misfit of arrangement and electronic chirps that exist in a state of defiance.

"....A disorienting but driving groove develops into something quite violent before it breaks down, only to speed up and come back even more violent. Dark, twisting dreams of grime and jungle set against backdrops of glitching wireframes resembling the cities of Bristol and London.

This album is an adaptation of the score I wrote for Sleeping Beauty Dreams, a high-tech audiovisual dance performance starring Diana Vishneva and was originally composed for a 32 channel surround sound system.” – Thys

Vhsceral’s sophomore contribution to the Renraku Global Media imprint speaks volumes about where the California-based producer resides in bass music. Me Time is a flowing expedition to the left field of his production on a path shrouded by cloudy textures and thick lows, exploring personality and cognitive dissonance through a diverse sonic palette. It reaches into a deep reflecting pool of sounds and influences and comes away as a robust second step into Vhsceral's perspective on electronic music.

 

Loud, rumbling ambience carries “Middle School” in, starting Me Time off with pizzicato strings forced into holding up a weighty atmosphere. Playful rhythms and instrumentation eventually give way to an authoritative saw lead, pulling everything back together last-minute. "Plosive" dips back and forth between melodic pleasantry and lethargic sound design, and "You Time" follows up with hot-headed aggression capable of melting itself down into a spacious, brooding aura. 

 
"Rekkaturvat" shoves stumbling house drums into a gelatinous sub, leaving this club-ready combination more than prepared for its sound system debut. A chirping top line poking through the surface of a muddily harmonious pool splits up these heady interactions until the song collides with its finish. “Upstairs” and “Me Time” bring groove, melody, and flow together, first stretching out towards distant trains of thought and then reassociating just before this release's conclusion.

 
Vhsceral gels together an auditory rendering of interlaced musical and personal experiences. A pensive self-examination with much ground to cover, this collection represents undervaluation, overthought, and dreary solitude.
