Nottingham based hip hop head and funky breaks producer extraordinaire, Toy Beats, joins us for another monthly Guest Mix on the channel, offering up his funky 60, showcasing his love for all things old school with a selection of funked up mash ups featuring classic joints from the likes of Dr Dre, Run DMC, Pete Rock & CL Smooth, Kurtis Blow, Nate Dogg & LL Cool J.

Rising from the dust of the 90's Free Party and Rave scene, Toy Beats started his DJ career at 17 years of age playing to crowds of party people in quarry's, forests and disused airfields. In more recent years he's picked up residencies at Rough Trade, After Dark and Various clubs and UK festivals.

Toy Beats has been releasing his own material since 2017, with remixes and tracks on the likes of Scour Records, Breakbeat Paradise Recordings and Cuttin' It Fine Records as well as now reaching his childhood dream of being selected to showcase his talents via the 'Funky Vibes UK Guest Mix Series'.

Funk Mix 70's & 80s - Dj XS London Old School Funk & Disco Classics Mix (2018) Part 1

Welcome to the Word Is Love Soul & Funk Show where this time we will be looking at the music of Soul Train. 

In the mix we will explore tracks by Chic, James Brown and Larry Levan plus a number of artists who appeared on the Soul Train.

Expect funky beats and bass lines with a myriad of soulful vocals, sultry saxaphones, sexy flutes, sleazy synths and tight percussion.

Soul Train was an American music variety television show, the first to prominently feature African American musical acts and dancers. Broadcast nationally from 1971 to 2006, it was one of the longest-running syndicated programs in American television history.

Soul Train was the brainchild of Chicago radio announcer Don Cornelius. It initially aired in 1970 on Chicago television station WCIU-TV. The show was produced in hour-long segments five afternoons a week and became a local television hit. It duplicated the environment of a dance club and featured a variety of noted musical performers as well as both professional and amateur dancers.

Soon Soul Train drew the interest of George Johnson, founder and president of Johnson Products Company (a black-owned hair-product manufacturer), whose support enabled the program to move into national syndication in 1971. The success of Soul Train reflected the rise and popularity of soul music and funk artists on recordings and radio programs.

By presenting an image of black culture as upbeat, exciting, and vibrant, Soul Train attracted many viewers of other ethnicities and contributed to the growing prestige of African Americans and black culture in mainstream America. Cornelius maintained control of the Soul Train brand until his death and produced several successful annual specials, including the ongoing Soul Train Music Awards.

This mix explores the sound of Soul Train throughout the 70's and 80's.

Funky Vibes Funk Mix 2019 - Dj XS Monthly Selection (Nu Funk, Breaks, Hip Hop, House & Disco Mix)

As someone who started Dj'ing in the 90s, I though it was probably time I put a mix together of some of the classic jams we used to get down to back in the day.
Like any era, there's a lot of BS online about what we were really listening to, but I like to think this is an honest representation of what was going on, at least for a South London boy.

Intentionally avoided too much housey stuff, UK garage, DnB and nu school breaks as I reckon that will all deserve it's own mix though kicking off with a few RnB gems, some early funky & feel good 90s hip hop, acid jazz as well as a nod to the Big Beat movement and naturally a few dance classics to finish.

Hope you all like it. Took a while to put together though good fun taking that journey back and rediscovering some quality jams. Tried to avoid too many avoid choices but hopefully some classic vibes to give everyone a taste of some of that 90s goodness!!!
