⚜️ It's difficult to put into words the immense gratitude and sheer joy I experienced during my time performing at Funkazba. The electric atmosphere and energy of the crowd were beyond description, and I vibed every moment of it.

To all those who joined us on our last night, I want to express my overwhelming gratitude for allowing me the privilege of sharing the closing set alongside Leeroy on Percussion. Despite encountering some technical hiccups with the recordings, I'm excited to present this unrefined glimpse of the night to you. My hope is that it can give a glimpse into the feeling of the night and its ever lasting memories.

From the depths of my heart, I thank each and every one of you for being an incredible audience to perform for. Your boundless love and enthusiasm really fire up my musical passion, and I am eternally thankful for your support. Can't wait for our next encounter on the D'floor and the opportunity to create more unforgettable moments together ❤️

1) Tell us a bit about yourself and your record collection.

I'm Dom and I run Miles Away Records. I've been collecting records for 10 or so years now. When I first started collecting records I was properly into northern soul. I remember the first proper record I purchased was a one sided bootleg of The Snake. Since then I've been lucky enough to have been to record shops all over the world from Peru to Berlin. Lots of my records have come via tips and recommendations from people I;ve worked with, record shop owners or my own personal research. I try to buy the majority of my records in record shops as I feel like you get better records that way which you might not have considered before but over the years I've spent a fair amount buying online via discogs and ebay. I have a particular love for soulful music be that soul 45s, jazz, jazz-funk, latin, salsa, rare groove, MPB and of course modern and northern soul and my record collection largely reflects that. 

2) 45/7 is all about celebrating the 7". Can you tell us a bit about what you love about the format.

I love 45s. I love being able to take a small box of 45s to a gig over your shoulder. I love the louder cut. The shorter time lengths keeping you on your toes. The price. The label artwork. The house bag. There's just such a simple beauty to them. The original idea of my label Miles Away was to put out soulful 45s from all over the world because of my love for the format. 

3) One hour of vinyl goodness... can you talk us through your selection for your 45/7 mix?

The mix consists of recent finds, classics and personal favourites. I wanted this mix to reflect my DJ style and I always prefer mixes which start slower and build up. I tried to keep it flowing as much as possible, blending where I could or chopping in where I thought it was right. I wanted the mix to keep the listener engaged and wondering what was coming next so in the latter end we dip into some Caribbean and salsa records to keep things interesting.

4) Where can people catch you / listen to your music? 

I have a monthly radio show on Soho Radio. Wednesday 6-8pm UK BST. Every 4 weeks. Aside from that, you can catch me Djing around London and beyond regularly playing at venues such as the Jazz Cafe, The Century Club, BBE Store, Brilliant Corners as well as running my own nights at The Jago club in Dalston.

The late 1970s Italian disco scene was a glittering fusion of dance beats, electronic experimentation, and unmistakable glamour. This set encapsulates the energy, joy, and innovation of this period, drawing listeners into a world where the synthesizer reigned supreme, and emotions ran high on the dance floor.
This era of Italian disco grew out of the country's fascination with American funk and soul, but the Italians added their own distinctive flavor, blending cutting-edge European electronic sounds with a Mediterranean sense of romance and drama. As Italy’s answer to the global disco explosion, it featured an irresistible mix of futuristic vibes and catchy, melodic hooks that created an entirely new style.
The Italian disco scene, particularly through the lens of Italo Disco, was a major force in shaping European dance music. It combined the sweeping melodrama and passion of Italian pop with the new electronic sounds emerging from the United States and Germany. Italo Disco tracks often featured upbeat tempos, catchy melodies, and synthesizer-driven productions. The genre became popular across Europe and even influenced the development of future electronic music genres like Eurodance and house music.

While artists like Mina and Battisti remained rooted in their more traditional pop and experimental influences, their excursions into disco elements reflected the pervasive influence of the genre. Patrizia Pellegrino, on the other hand, was much more of a pop culture figure emblematic of the glitzy, carefree attitude that defined the Italo Disco era.

Together, these artists represent different facets of the Italian music scene, showing how diverse the impact of disco was—from influencing established legends to launching new stars. Their contributions helped to create a unique blend of sounds that defined a significant chapter in Italy’s musical history.

Introduisant l'arrivée du LP "Juguya" de Baba Commandant, sur le label Sublime Frequencies, Mawimbi est fier de présenter "Wasso", l'un des titres les plus frappants de l'album, dans une toute nouvelle version accompagnée de remixes dans l'esprit du label, signés Loya ou encore M. Boom.

Caractère excentrique et mystérieux de la scène underground de Ouagadougou, Baba Commandant a débuté comme danseur Bobo traditionnel avant de s'engager dans une riche carrière musicale et de rejoindre le célèbre burkinabé Victor Démé en tant que musicien de sa tournée. Influencé par Fela Kuti, King Sunny Adé et Moussa Doumbia, Baba Commandant joue au dozo n'goni, un instrument associé aux chasseurs traditionnels Donso, reliant les écarts entre les différentes générations et les strates de la société burkinabé.

Accompagné du Mandingo Band, Baba Commandant nous délivre un mélange d'afrobeat style Fela, de mandinka blues et de funk hard-hitting. Enregistré au Ouaga Jungle Studios, "Wasso" est un excellent exemple des sons bruts, qui fondent le Mandinka blues, le dub et l'afrobeat nigérian, le tout avec une touche de punk.

La face A se dote également d'un remix signé Loya du label Mawimbi, dont la réinterprétation provoque un rythme plus dense accompagné de subtiles couches de sons organiques.

La face B du disque quant à elle est composée de deux remixes friendly DJ, avec des samples impressionnants du producteur toulousain M. Boom. Dépouillant la piste originale jusqu'à en sortir ses éléments les plus animés. Les deux versions feront des armes parfaites pour les DJs world comme les DJs de house music.

Following the release of Baba Commandant's debut album "Juguya" on the mighty Sublime Frequencies label, Mawimbi is proud to present "Wasso", one of the most striking cut from the album, in brand new mixing shape alongsides killer electronic remixes from the likes of Mawimbi signee Loya and rising producer Mr. Boom. 

A rather eccentric and mysterious character from the Ouagadougou underground scene, Baba Commandant started out as a traditional Bobo dancer, before engaging in a rich musical career and joining Burkinabé star Victor Démé as one of his touring musicians. Influenced by the likes of Fela Kuti, King Sunny Adé and Moussa Doumbia, Baba Commandant plays dozo n'goni, an instrument associated with traditional Donso hunters, bridging the gaps between different generations and strata of Burkinabé society. 

Accompanied by his Mandingo Band, Baba Commandant play a mixture of Fela-style afrobeat, mandinka blues and hard-hitting funk. Recorded at the notorious Ouaga Jungle Studios, "Wasso" is a prime example of the band's unpolished and raw sounds, melting Mandinka blues, dub and Nigerian afrobeat with a punk attitude. 

The A-side also features a remix by Mawimbi signee Loya, whose leftfield reinterpretation moves at a much higher pace with epic modular motifs and subtle organic layers of sounds.

The B-side of the record is made of two DJ-friendly remixes with impressive mixing work from Toulouse-based producer Mr. Boom. Stripping the original track down to its most lively elements, both mixes are perfect club-ready weapons for tropical-minded and house DJs.
