Luca Bacchetti - When We Dip 110

They sat across the table, eyes fixed on one another, a sense of disbelief discernible through the deep lines on their faces. Decades had past since they'd last been face to face. So much had happened, so much had changed in that time; it was impossible to know where either of them should begin. The woman opened her mouth softly, then paused. He raised a finger to his lips and smiled warmly. They didn't need words now...

Despite the current circumstances, Berlin-based label Malka Tuti believe reflection, contemplation and adaptation are the best ways to work through this situation. It's this perspective that's motivated them to move forward with their plan to release a digital compilation to celebrate their fifth birthday.  

Featuring five tracks (for five years) the EP includes a couple of contributions from the Malka Tuti family and some secret versions of previous releases that the label bosses have been playing out for some time. Spanning slow trance, ambient and DIY post punk, contributions come from Die Orangen, Vactrol Park, Xen Yovav, Die Orangen, Gordon Pohl and our pick, a sludgy hypnotic remix from Khidja of Tapan and Radwan Ghazi Moumneh, taken off Tapan's Europa LP released in 2017.

Descending even further, the divers recalled how long ago it was since they’d seen the comforting bright sky. They had entered an astounding new world. At around 300, 400, 500 metres, sunlight started to slip away like a suffocated flame, and the water stopped being the gentle blue that most are familiar with. Another 500 metres deeper, the ocean became an unforgiving black that engulfed any and all kinds of light. Surrounded at every angle by a dark and desolate expanse that felt perpetual, the three divers drifted downwards, with a machine of glass and twisted metal being the only thing keeping them safe from the bone-crushing pressure. 

Alessandro Parisi embarks on an exploration into the deep world of synthetic sonics on ‘Babilonia’, moving at a pensive pace with serpentine synth lines, acid bass, and breathy vocal pads. Parisi’s forthcoming album Ascensione Progressiva is out on Medical Records, a label based in Seattle who are purveyors of minimal synth, cosmic disco, and other forms of futuristic music.

Istanbul’a is a song written for the ancient city Istanbul that evokes timeless questions: Can one ever leave behind one’s home? Can one ever truly arrive at a home that was once abandoned yet never quite forgotten? The original version of this haunting track is a dreamy meander through a labyrinth of marimbas and harps, orchestrated delicately by Santi and brought to life by Tuğçe’s ethereal voice. Santi & Tuğçe first released an extended version of this track in 2017 in the aftermath of political events that filled the city with grave uncertainty, much like the current moment in which we find ourselves. Even more so than at the time of its original release, today Istanbul’a captures a widespread sentiment of liminality and uprootedness that echoes all around and gains new meaning in our world as we ask: Can we go back to a past that is long gone? Will things ever be the same again?

Along with Santi & Tuğçe’s revision of their original Istanbul’a, this EP features three brand new renditions. KMLN blends elements of deep tribal house and minimal techno into the original track that is bound to bring the heat to the dancefloor, while Herrhausen & Treindl’s approach yields an equally danceable, yet more laid-back euphoria. The EP ends on a climactic note with Dunkelbunt’s version featuring his signature transglobal electronic-instrumental sound that is full of energy, swing and a sense of eclecticism that is as layered as the ancient city Istanbul itself.

The office had long since closed; everybody had left for the day and only a few flickering lights illuminated the floor. Normal working hours didn't exist for him anymore, his drive and determination to rise all the way to the top had taken over his life. He wanted to be the best; the most admired and revered in his field. But he knew to do so he had to work his way up from the bottom and always keep his eye on the prize, otherwise it was all the way down again...

San Francisco's ROAM Recordings call on the skills of Play Pal Music founder Teniente Castillo for their next release, which features reworks from Lithuanian producer Roe Deers and space.rec co-founder Jonathan Kusuma. All The Way Down follows releases from the likes of Amarcord, K-Effect and Darlyn Vlys, and features two originals that flaunt Teniente Castillo's signature style; a driving, hypnotic synth cut and a low slung psychedelic offering.

Sand dunes stretched as far as the eye could see, each golden grain made all the bolder beneath the bright blue sky. They journeyed for hours and hours, mesmerised by their beautiful surroundings. On one side mountain ranges stretched high above the skyline, while on the other forgotten palaces and ruins stood in all their glory. There was something magical about this place...

For his first solo effort, producer and musician Bab, who is a member of Paris-based electronica band 404, explores the sounds of Northern Africa. Sahar is a journey into the land of Algeria, created using ethnographic records from the beginning of the 20th century and used in his own contemporary context. Set for release on Rotterdam's Afrobotic Musicology, the four tracks are a homage to the country that Bab loves the most.

Walking through the empty fields he cast his sight towards the loch in the distance, it was a radiant blue beneath the glimmering sun and upon the water were soft white boats which could barely be seen but for their flickering sails and pale silhouettes. He was not yet neither here or there, hopefully by the end of his hike he might find himself closer to paradise than he was in the present. The escape had been a long time coming, the prison walls had been tall and oppressive for far too long. Now he was free.

Johannes Klingebiel is set to release an EP on Ancient Future Now, described as a "lo-fi" house affair it is suitably trendy yet carries its own unique set of musical principles and offers a whole lot more than meets the eye. Listen carefully...

Her eyes were fixated upon the distance, it were as if her whole face had been cast in stone and would not flinch. She was modest yet pointed and purposeful, looking outwards upon the water towards the horizon where the clouds met with the ocean far away. She was not phased by the passing boats or the wild wind which roared all around her for she knew that one day all of this would be gone, replaced by a bittersweet memory of something else. This was her demure. 

Julian Bainbridge is set to release a new EP on Sounds Over Seas, this track taken from the forthcoming EP is a beautiful cosmic voyage through the unknown. Wonderful arpeggios are paired with deep, moody pads in what is a beautiful realisation.

She pushed her foot down hard on the accelerator, gathering up dust as she pulled out the driveway. Driving had become her only escape, the only time she could think clearly. At home she had to be strong and always save face, nobody could know what was really going on in her head. As she reached the motorway, there wasn't a car in sight, a clear road stretching as far as the eye could see. She smiled deeply before hurtling off into the night.

Control Freak Recordings, the imprint brought to you by London-based party Cabin Fever, are back for their fourth release, this time from label co-founder Customer Service. Marking his debut production outing, Dance First, Think Later, features five tracks that sit on the fringes of electronic music. The A-Side brings a heavy dose of dance floor tackle followed by beautifully composed leftfield rhythms, then moving to the flip, we're hit with rolling hypnotic drums, early hours breakbeat and haunting acid-tinged grooves to see us out.

The prolific and innovative label Controlla, managed with an iron fist by the beloved and intoxicating duo Ali X X Ximena, is undoubtedly one of the responsible for the rising of the new Mexican Techno scene. In some of their most acclaimed releases, an impeccable formula: Bringing together top-notch collaborations provided by local and international talents. Take a peek at the team they gathered to remix "Low Vibrations", their forthcoming release: Alvee, BadWolf, Black Space, Eric Duncan, Ghoster, Kitschy Kitsch (SXDNS078), Nastia 6.9, Potheadz, Pvlomo (SXDNS098) & Galo Santo, Roe Deers (SXDNS138) and Tkuz. Not bad, not bad at all, right?

The remix we chose to premiere brings BadWolf howling out loud to the moon. The Toluca-based producer shows proper skills by providing a pure Mex-Tech version. A tough but slow and sexy interpretation with mellow FXs, velvety arpeggiated synth layers, and easy-going percussive elements. The use of only some fragments of the lyrics brings a minimalistic touch to Mr. Wolf's contribution to this big release. We really dig it!
