One of the esteemed second wave of Detroit techno artists that emerged in the early-to-mid ‘90s, Stacey Pullen’s place in the electronic music cannon has long been assured. 

A skillful producer who values quality over quantity, he made his name via collaborations with Chez Damier and Kevin Saunderson before setting about crafting his own style that bridged the gap between house and techno and led to 2001’s artist album Todayisthetomorrowyouwerepromisedyesterday. As a DJ, he has spent more than two decades playing everywhere from intimate sweatboxes to the biggest festivals, and was an early guest in the hallowed DJ-KiCKS, fabric and Resident Advisor mix series. 

Stacey Pullen is an enduring artist who has never been subject to the fickle pitfalls of the hype spotlight; he continues to be highly sought-after, with Balance snapping him up for his first official compilation in six years continuing the Australian brand’s commitment to supporting the underground’s most revered legends, and he has not disappointed with his multifarious selection.

As an integral part of the global dance community, he has dominated main stages around the world, as well as all of the other global haunts such as Womb, Pacha, Air and Sankeys. To add to this, his label Gem Records has been garnering more international recognition with every release. Balance Selections 016: Secret Cinema

Patrice Bäumel occupies a highly distinctive and less-trodden niche in electronic music. He operates at the intersection of the emotive and the technical; his keen ear for melody and drama working in tandem with intricate sound design and experimental templates. While you could loosely label him as a ‘techno’ artist, his love of ambient, electronica and thereabouts are just as crucial to his musical identity as any sense of dancefloor machination might be.
A stalwart of the Amsterdam scene who held residencies at the legendary Club 11 and Trouw, he has proved himself to be a formidable producer with releases on Kompakt, !K7, Get Physical, My Favorite Robot and Systematic as well as his acclaimed debut album Vapour. He has time and again proven his skill in crafting intricate, often conceptual mixes, frequently weaving in unusual field recordings, found sound and speech samples to add a hypnotic layer of otherworldliness to the proceedings. Here he joins the illustrious Balance Presents cannon, joining the likes of Guy J, Kölsch, Fur Coat and jozif in the series of one-disc mix compilations and following recent double-disc releases from the Australian curators by Magda and Stacey Pullen.

We are going to Switzerland (by way of Argentina) for our next podcast to welcome techno artist Barem into the Balance Selections family. Best known for his releases on Richie Hawtin’s M_nus label, the producer has really made a name for himself with his warm, stripped back techno and house productions, a style which he feels encapsulates a feeling more so than an actual genre: “Minimal is not really a sound… it’s just a way of making music. It represents good taste, stylish sounds, the underground, after hours… Whatever native roots you have, whatever music you like or liked in the past, it all fits in there and it’s not dying in my opinion. It’s just arrived at the point where we’ve rediscovered how free and amazing the concept and the reasons behind it are.’’

But as with all good artists, career growth and change is essential to the soul, and last year the producer announced his departure from the M_nus crew to pursue new projects. And he did just that with  the announcement of FUN Recordings, a new label co-founded by Barem which is already 2 releases deep with tracks from Barem, and fellow Argentinean producer and label co-founder, Alex Cabrera.

Having played at some of the biggest global events cites including Detroit Music Festival, Timewarp, Miami, Ibiza and ADE, there really is no doubt that Barem is considered a major player in the global scene – and the Argentinean has delivered a suitably quality mix which should keep listeners coming back for more.

Recorded as my contribution to the HUGE Innervisions Radio 3rd Birthday celebration and aired on 1st May (and again on 4th May), this mix covers similar musical territory to my previous two mixes for Deanna Avra's show Emotions on Innervisions Radio. 

The mix is loaded with tunes from the melodic end of the techno spectrum combined with healthy doses of melancholic electronica and glitchy soundscapes.
