Irish investigative journalist Veronica Guerin was murdered in a contract killing on June 26, 1996, at Newlands Cross, Dublin. She was known for her brave, in-depth reporting on Ireland's criminal underworld and drug cartels, which ultimately led to her assassination. Her murder caused national outrage in Ireland and served as a watershed moment in the country's fight against organized crime. Legislative Change: In response to public pressure, the Irish government enacted emergency legislation, notably the Proceeds of Crime Act 1996 and the creation of the Criminal Assets Bureau (CAB). The CAB was given powers to seize assets purchased with money obtained through crime, which led to a significant crackdown on criminal enterprises. Guerin was posthumously named one of the International Press Institute's 50 World Press Freedom Heroes in 2000. Her life and death were the subject of two films, including the 2003 film Veronica Guerin starring Cate Blanchett.
