Mimicries was composed during the Gaudeamus-Montréal week in April 2014 in collaboration with the members of 7090. The goal of the Leftovers project was to create pieces from discarded sketches that the participants brought along. 

"Usually, when I brainstorm or explore material for a composition, I like to vocalize and record my musical ideas – instead of sketching directly on paper. Therefore my “leftovers” consisted of recorded vocal improvisations that I had accumulated in the past year. By submitting these audio sketches, I wanted to approach music through sound, rather than sight (= musical notation). We selected three short vocal improvisations. The piece evolved as the members of 7090 attempted to imitate these as closely as they could, mimicking the pitch content, morphology, texture, and character of the sounds."

De compositie Mimicries ontstond tijdens de Gaudeamus-Montréal week in april 2014 in samenwerking met de leden van 7090 in het kader van het Leftovers project. Het uitgangspunt was dat de deelnemende componisten nieuwe stukken zouden baseren op hun afgedankte schetsen. 

"Meestal gebruik ik mijn stem om muzikale ideeën vorm te geven tijdens het nadenken over nieuwe composities. Dergelijke experimenten neem ik op in plaats van ze op te schrijven. In andere woorden, mijn 'leftovers' (restjes) bestonden uit opnames van vocale improvisaties die ik had gemaakt in het afgelopen jaar. Dit maakte het mogelijk om de muziek geluidsmatig te benaderen en niet visueel (via het notenschrift). We hebben drie korte stemimprovisaties uitgezocht; de musici probeerden deze weer te geven op hun eigen instrumenten, door het imiteren van toonhoogte, vorm, textuur en timbre."

“Myself On” is a short composition written specifically for the Phth ensemble in 2019. It unfolds a large palette of musical expressions from a quasi-medieval chant-like exactly written down modal music to an “impromptu” situation, where one of the singers leaves the stage and the others don’t know in advance what they do next and simply follow the instructions on their phones. The composition explores the ways how a singer incorporates new information received on stage and how that merges with and affects the development of the pre-learned musical material. “Myself On” (or alternatively “My Cell Phone”) implies the influence of the smartphones and social media on our daily life as well as on the creative expression.

They Sing and They Clap and They Shout

"They Sing and They Clap and They Shout" is based on the songs of Swedish-American labour activist Joe Hill (1879-1915). Hill was a member of the Industrial Workers of the World, an international labour union founded on principles of “revolutionary industrial unionism”, and he contributed numerous protest songs to their “Little Red Songbook”. In 1915, Hill was executed for murder in Salt Lake City after a lengthy and widely-publicized trial. The IWW—and many subsequent historians—have maintained that Hill was framed, and he has since been held up as a martyr for the labour movement. After his execution by firing squad, his ashes were divided into 600 packets and sent to various branches of the IWW and their allies. The ashes were marked with the epitaph: “Joe Hill murdered by the capitalist class, Nov. 19, 1915”. 

"They Sing and They Clap and They Shout" incorporates many of Joe Hill’s songs, or, more specifically, many performances of his songs. The piece is peppered with transcriptions of tiny fragments from performances by Joe Glazer, Cisco Houston, Harry “Haywire Mac” McClintock, Pete Seeger, Earl Robinson, Barbara Dane and, particularly, Swedish folk singer Finn Zetterholm (drawn from his 1969 album "Joe Hill på svenska"). 

Joe Hill travelled across America lending his voice and his songs to IWW strikes and protests. In 1912 he travelled to British Columbia where he joined the Fraser River railway strikes and composed several new songs specifically for the striking workers. These included “Where the Fraser River Flows” based on the then-popular tune “Where The River Shannon Flows” by James I. Russell. They Sing and They Clap and They Shout incorporates a recording of “Where the Fraser River Flows” by the great American folk singer and activist Utah Phillips, used here with the generous permission of his estate.

"They Sing and They Clap and They Shout" takes its title from Joe Hill’s most famous song “The Preacher and the Slave” in which he coined the phrase “pie in the sky”:

Long-haired preachers come out every night
Try to tell you what's wrong and what's right
But when asked how 'bout something to eat 
They will answer in voices so sweet

You will eat, bye and bye
In that glorious land above the sky
Work and pray, live on hay 
You'll get pie in the sky when you die.

Citizenship as Invention

This is the third episode of "Nomadic Sound Worlds," a four-part series that explores Canadian contemporary music through the lens of present-day global migration. Published in 1999, a collection of essays named "Letters of Transit: Reflections on Exile, Identity, Language, and Loss" (ed. André Aciman) informs and inspires this project, with trajectories branching out from related themes including mobility, displacement, loss, reconciliation of polarized truths, and invention of selves. In this regard, the series will feature selected immigrant Canadian composers and artists, whose musical worlds collide with various personal stories of immigration.
This episode explores the notion of citizenship as a political invention, featuring composers Dorothy Chang, Sergio Barroso, Gabriel Dharmoo, and York University scholar Soma Chatterjee.

Dans le cadre de l'événement Je suis une femme d'octobre, ESPACE GO a invité les artistes Jenny Cartwright, Marilou Craft et Émilie Monnet ainsi que les chercheuses et accompagnatrices Viviane Michel, Ginette Noiseux, Alexandra Pierre, Annie O’Bomsawin-Bégin, Camille Robert et Emmanuelle Sirois à revoir ces dernières décennies de mobilisation de femmes en images et en mots, en chroniques historiques et en hymnes aux combats menés. 

Trois balados et trois récits historiques sont découlés de cette commande. Chacun des podcast est accompagné d'un texte complémentaire donnant plus de renseignements sur les faits évoqués dans les balados. 

On y aborde trois grandes luttes menées par des femmes au cours des 50 dernières années soient celle du Front de libération des femmes, des femmes autochtones et des femmes racisées.
