ÂVÂZ for trombone and tape is dedicated to brilliant artist Ivo Nilsson, and performed by him at the fourth edition of the Tehran Contemporary Music Festival on 24th June 2019 at Roudaki Hall in Tehran, Iran.

Ciclo Continuo (2021) for soprano saxophone & percussion:
prepared snare drum, singing bowls, tuning forks, crotale.
Composition Ciclo Continuo seeks to achieve a hybrid organic timbre while associating atypical instruments to complement each other. A snare drum is used as a resonating body for the objects. The snare drum's wire also serves as a saturation effect changing the timbre of metallic instruments and also reacting to the saxophone's sound. Dyads and multiphonics are predominant in the saxophone part while pitched, but very fragile and unstable sounds are used in the percussion section. Harmony is enriched with beatings creating synergy between musicians, unfolding timeless processes. The duo plays the cycle that is on loop, an endless repetition devoid of narration, a basso continuo of an
unsung aria.

Commissioned by Gabriel Trottier for his ph.d in performance at L'université de Montréal. This is a live take recorded at the studios there. 

All electronics are live and react directly to how Gabriel is playing through the use of score following.

Le trompettiste Noé Nillni a conçu ce programme de musiques de chambre contemporaines comme un voyage à travers des œuvres d’esthétiques et de rhétoriques diverses, mais réunies par leur théâtralité et par une commune question de poétique instrumentale : comment penser, composer, et jouer la trompette dans un esprit chambriste, l’habillant pour un rôle qui lui a souvent été étranger ?

As with every good western millennial, the first thing I ever learned to do was to consume and want more. Sugar here is, of course, exemplary of the nefarious yet completely socially accepted poison of consumerism, which also ties into the dual nature of the sweet tooth: sweets make us smile because of their sugar and their often oh-so-cute presentation and depiction, but they also rot our teeth, and in a most insidious fashion! What a beautiful metaphor for happy neoliberalism…

In this post-truth age, image is everything: candy is food and advertisements depict real life. A major chord means happy emoji, a minor chord means sad emoji. How does this affect our grasp of deeper connection through art? I wanted to play with these codes and clichés and to see how I could harvest their energy to highlight the violence hidden behind each major chord.

SWEET TOOTH (2018) - excerpt

Seiren
According to Greek and Roman mythology, Seiren is a seductive sea creature in the form of part woman part bird. There are old tales of sailors enchanted by the creature’s beautiful and haunting singing that eventually lured them to wreck their boats onto rocks. The interacting images of the creature, the human, and the sea are depicted by the three instruments of the trio: flute/alto flute, cello, and piano. This work explores many different instrumental colors and extended effects. Dramatic use of dynamics and provocative high melodic lines are also used to portray a lyrical yet intensely mysterious character of Seiren.

Gabriel Trottier est un corniste soliste, chambriste et musicien d’orchestre interprétant un répertoire allant de la musique ancienne à la musique actuelle sur instruments historiques et modernes. De plus, il est porteur de projets de commandes d’œuvres et participe à des projets interdisciplinaires qui allient à la musique des éléments d’autres disciplines artistiques, tels que le théâtre et 
les arts visuels.

Présentement membre de l’Ensemble Tesse, Gabriel Trottier travaille aussi régulièrement avec la Société de Musique Contemporaine du Québec ainsi qu’avec plusieurs orchestres et ensembles québécois. À l’international, il a joué entre autres avec des ensembles tels que l’Oslo Sinfonietta et le quintette à vent Le Concert Impromptu (Paris). Diplomé de la Norwegian Academy of Music (M. Mus 2016) et de l’Université de Montréal (D. Mus 2021), il a étudié sous la tutelle de Frøydis Ree Wekre, Julius Pranevicius, Saar Berger et Louis-Philippe Marsolais. Spécialisé en musique contemporaine, il a été fellow de l’International Ensemble Modern Academy (M. Mus 2018), en Allemagne et il a participé à l’Académie du Festival de Lucerne. Son travail a été soutenu, entre autres, par le Conseil des Arts du Canada, le Conseil des Arts et des Lettres du Québec (CALQ) et la Fondation Sylva-Gelber pour la musique. 
Gabriel Trottier vise à encourager et soutenir l’innovation dans l’écriture d’œuvres pour le cor, en contribuant à la recherche et en diffusant le savoir sur l’histoire de la musique ainsi que sur les nouvelles pratiques artistiques. En ce sens, ses activités professionnelles incluent aussi l’enseignement, l’interprétation de la musique mixte et l’improvisation.

Gabriel Trottier is a solo, chamber and orchestral horn player who performs baroque to new music on modern and historical instruments. In addition, he initiates the commissioning of new works and participates in interdisciplinary projects that bring together music with other art forms, including theater and visual arts. 

Currently a member of Ensemble Tesse, Gabriel Trottier also frequently works with the Société de Musique Contemporaine du Québec as well as many orchestras and ensembles in the province. Internationally, he has worked with the Oslo Sinfonietta and the woodwind quintet Le Concert Impromptu (Paris), among others. A graduate of the Norwegian Academy of Music (M. Mus 2016) and the University of Montreal (D. Mus 2021), he studied under the tutelage of Frøydis Ree Wekre, Julius Pranevicius, Saar Berger and Louis-Philippe Marsolais. Specializing in contemporary music performance, he was a fellow at the International Ensemble Modern Academy (M. Mus 2018) in Germany and is an alumnus of the Lucerne Festival Academy. His work has been supported by The Canada Council for the Arts, the Conseil des Arts et des Lettres du Québec (CALQ) and the Sylva-Gelber Music Foundation.	

Gabriel Trottier aspires to support innovation within the creation of new works for the horn and by contributing to research. Further, he aims to disseminate the knowledge of music history and new artistic practices. In that way, his professional activities also include teaching, live electronics, and improvisation.
