Dropping the next chapter of our mix series, we’re joined by @o-squared Bood, a quietly renowned DJ in his region. For this edition, he delivers a deep mix built around hidden and forgotten records. Beyond the decks, he’s also one of the co-founders of Soundscapes Zanzi Festival, a unique, sun-soaked and moonlit musical experience on the east coast of Zanzibar. He is also the founder of Phono Sound System, a high-fidelity custom sound stack he built in the UAE with sound-system builder Uncle Ronnie and his company 8Mile Sound.

1. How and where was the mix recorded?

Just at home with 2 Technics 1210s and and E&S DJR 400 mixer

2. Can you tell us about the idea behind the mix?
It’s basically records that have been in my bag lately while traveling to play. I just felt like sharing a bit of everything I’ve been packing, the different moods I’ve been reaching for. It’s not one specific direction, more like a snapshot of what I’m into and playing these days. A bit of everything, really.

3. What are you up to next? Projects, ideas…

Music-wise, I just finished the tunes for my first solo EP on vinyl and honestly I couldn’t be happier. It’s coming out on my friend Shadi Megallaa’s label, Ark To Ashes, a label I genuinely respect and love, so it feels really special to be part of it.

I also have a track coming up on a VA with Interweaved, and I recently started working on an EP for another amazing label from France that I’ve always admired. It’s a really beautiful feeling to be invited to make music for labels I’ve played music and bought records from for years. That means a lot to me.

Other than releases, last year myself and three close friends came together and founded Phono Sound System. We built it with the help of 8mile Sound, founded by the legendary Jamaican sound stack builder Ronald “Uncle Ronnie” Jarrett and the incredible audio technician Quintin Christian. The whole idea behind Phono is simple: clean, warm, pristine sound. A system that really lets musicians and DJs express themselves properly, no hype, just honest audio the way it’s meant to be felt.

It's what human beings naturally do when a rhythm is just so good...
