For their 3rd outing, Duncan Forbes and his 49North imprint choose to dish up their 4-track EP wares, in a slightly more traditional manner - a Double DF A-Side, with a single remix of each OG on the flip.

First up is 'Omnite' - a proper behemoth of a track, that's anchored around raw and dynamic break beats and an elastic lead that radiates this thick, unearthly magic. Then we have the wintery, acid-lined grooves of 'Silence Runs Through It' - a track that lures us down a more heads-down and hypnotic kind of path.

On the flip-side meanwhile are super hot London collective, Denham Audio - who deliver a delightfully aerial and versicolor interpretation of 'Omnite'; as well as Benjamin Frohlich and his super respectful rework of 'Silence Runs Through It'... one which essentially sees the PermVac boss dial up the dark and amp up the acid ever so slightly - whilst leaving the heart and soul of the OG - very much intact

"Will Saul’s AUS Music has seen a number of new additions to the roster this year as the label continues to prosper. Now - adding to names such as Timothy Blake, Geeman and Escape, AUS welcome in another auspicious producer by the name of Fold. Having released records on Man Make Music and Electric Minds - Fold lines up his ‘Netflix & Chill’ EP: a potent stack of Hip-Hop indebted House tracks backed up by the extolled and shady Kassem Mosse on remix duties.

‘Calmer Mood’ kicks things off, hopping between bpms and driving grubby and groovy samples over a rough kick. Filters control builds peaks and troughs guaranteed to set things off before ‘Wallop’ rattles off with powerful 909 drums and truncated samples in a manner that will please fans of his ‘Mr Wood’ no end.

‘Dreamscape’ then melds deftly chopped breaks with Jazz melodies to set a rich, blue tone that’s propelled into overdrive by splashing drum solos stitched together with flare. Workshop owner Kassem Mosse then offers up his interpretation of ‘Dreamscapes’ and in doing so introduces a subtle degree of melancholy to the original that links rich, spectral pads with tumbling breaks and delayed Sax stabs that round off another fine addition to AUS’ catalogue."

Quavius, the deep south vagabond known for his raw and sophisticated dance collages returns to Lustwerk Music with his second EP for the label, Find Ready. 

While mostly an instrumental affair, Find Ready is an updated glimpse into the producer / rapper’s latest repertoire, ranging from the sunny, Baltimore club-influenced house of “Flo Central” to funky Motor City workouts like “Heaven Is In You” and “Find Ready”. The EP starts off on a high clip with a nostalgic, forward-driving deep house instrumental, “That Beat.”

Quavius dons the mic on three of the seven tracks. “The Gist”, the EPs cornerstone, sounds something like a Rakim-meets-Sensate Focus. The A and B side are each topped off with downtempo Hip-hop. “Let it Rock” and “Fa Sho” are contemporary updates on cloud rap that bleed atmosphere and confidence while revealing Quavius’ knack for tight songwriting and arrangement.

Conversations from a bathroom stall. Greetings shouted across the dance floor. Lines whispered in your ear at the bar. These are just a few of the audible vignettes that make up Drew Briggs’ (AKA Divine Interface) latest EP, Seeking Arrangement. Briggs is our steadfast narrator throughout, offering thoughtful meditations on love, time, and what we do with them. He may suspect that love and romance are transactions, but it’s not that bleak: on Seeking Arrangement, he’s making collages with the receipts.

This was the ethos behind Briggs’ decision to name his latest release after the leading sugar baby dating site. Seeking Arrangement is both a nod to his native Atlanta (home to the largest sugar baby population in the country) and a playful commentary on the state of modern romance. Briggs, it turns out, is well-acquainted with the subject - a fixture in the local DJ scene by night and an employee of a sex furniture distributor by day, he’s built a life around helping people get down.

Briggs’ second release as Divine Interface (and first on 2MR) plunges the listener directly into his nightly routine - from club to afterparty to cab ride home. This effort is aided in part by his somewhat unorthodox creative process - most of the album was recorded in his bed, where he set up his equipment to encourage himself to work in the tired hours between gigs and shifts. As a result, the freshness of the material is palpable; the subject matter thoroughly lived-in. It makes perfect sense, after all, for an album about romance to be born between the sheets. Full of field notes from a night well spent, this is bedroom hip-hop done by someone who’s hardly home.

Perhaps this is because home, for Briggs, extends beyond his four walls. The city of Atlanta is the boisterous backdrop of this record, making appearances both literally, as in fellow ATL artist Fit Of Body’s appearance on “Sometimes,” and sonically, in Briggs’ unique fusion of the local hip-hop and electronic scenes. “In The Back” is a sleazy dance floor banger, while “Slide Piece” is a liquid-smooth after party groove. Lines blur across genre in the same way that hours seem to after a few drinks: “it’s getting late,” he muses on lead single “So Fine,” “but she don’t believe in time.”

Drew Briggs has never been a sugar baby, but he passes no judgment on the lifestyle. After all, aren’t all relationships transactional in a way? If it’s not money being traded, it’s social status, access, validation, emotional support, etc. Whether we’re aware of it or not, we make tacit agreements and set expectations. In other words, we seek arrangements.
