Whoever Client_03 is—their official bio says "neither human nor machine"—they certainly love electro. In the interview below, they say making it is "all I do." The stubbornly anonymous project has been making waves across continents and scenes, introducing audiences used to dubstep, drum & bass and trap to the distinctive joys of electro. Through a series of self-releases dating back to 2019, Client_03 has earned a fanbase with simple graphics and wonderfully jargon-y titles—"Prosperity Stream Divider," "Interpersonal Relationship Assessment"—that more than live up to the genre pastiche with genuinely funky electro grooves. Pitched between loose and robotic, their tracks are what we call rollers: stackable, interlockable and reliable.

This RA Podcast was recorded live at last year's Bass Coast Festival, where the masked producer's set was among the most anticipated. They—or it—didn't disappoint, and here we've got 60 minutes-plus of smooth and occasionally raucous electro that eventually mutates into dubstep, jungle and beyond. There are several spinbacks, tons of Client_03 material new and old and a few select tracks from artists like Sam Binga, Nikki Nair and Fixate. It's the sound of a certain kind of future, as refracted through its past.

Hey Will! Congratulations on the release of your latest EP 'Four! Beats!' and thank you for taking the time out to record a mix for our podcast series.
Thank you for having me!

Where did you record this mix?
At home in my spare room which is also where I work and also where we have a spare bed - safe to say it’s pretty cosy. 
The mix is actually pretty similar to a set that I played at the Lion & Lamb last year, which was a charity event raising money for children in Gaza.  

What equipment did you use?
I used my cute little XDJ-700’s and an FF-4000 mixer which is slowly but surely succumbing to some fraying cables I think. Does the job for now though.

What else is in the pipeline for 2024? What does the future hold for Will Hofbauer? 
I’m turning 30 this year which is equal parts fun and existentially challenging. What have I been doing with my life? I’m combatting The Impending Doom by continuing my attempts at learning Spanish and embarking on some world travels which I’m sure will be delightful.
Musically, the whirm train with Sangre Voss will keep chugging along, there’s an EP on a Glasgow-based label en route, and a few other tasty morsels too! 

We recently saw that Four Tet played ‘Subtracting the Egg’ on his Lot Radio show. That must have been a great feeling. 
It was super nice and quite surprising to see for sure! I love a lot of his music and have been out to see him a bunch - some fond memories over the years. 

If there could be one artist who you work or collaborate with in the future who would it be? 
Sangre Voss, of course! I think we work well together and crucially we are good friends. I want to make music with friends. I think it’s pretty important to be able to tell someone that what they’re doing is crap and to stop. I would find that awkward to do if they weren’t my mate haha.

Here at WE FORFEIT, we are always on the hunt. Discounted bread, free wine, even the odd compliment, all are fair game and very much appreciated. When it comes to music, a certain furrowed brow of seriousness is employed. 
Through our shows, interviews and mixes, we’ve tried to present electronics with a difference, electornics that make a difference. To the snowy peaks of Canada with Solvent, to the dusty plains of Almería with Mynationshit, our objective is giving a greater audience to what is already great. This month is no exception.
Travelling even furhter, the furthest in fact, this month is dedicated to Featherstone. This Australian artist, a talent that has graced labels like Gated Recordings, Nebulae and his own Ernest’s Way. He has a full hour long mix that collects acid, braindance, electro and techno while giving you some of his own unreleased works. Fantastic stuff and thanks Ben.
Robbie is on warm-up and has some freshly baked releases alongside some golden classics.  You’ll have tracks from labels like 030303, D.Ko Records and Partout with musicians like Böhm, Reedale Rise and the incredible Ismistik featuring.

Following an appearance on Touched Electronix 4 and a collaboration with Zodiac Childs towards the end of last year, this man’s debut EP Error 502 with the brilliant “Wisdom Track” has established him as a promising new talent. Using analogue hardware, the London-based producer fuses melancholic braindance and breakbeat-laced electro with cosmic acid melodies.

This mix is a perfect reflection of what this man is capable of: a blend of electro, acid & breaks with tons of long stretched soundscapes and lush melodies. It contains both well-established bangers and a few unreleased gems.
