“Galaxy Faruq is for the late, great saxophonist and composer Faruq Z. Bey. It has the feeling of what I recall Griot Galaxy sounded like when I first heard them as a teenager: modes strange to my ear, stacked multiple meters, funkiness. 

I remember sitting in senior year music history class reading the Detroit Metro-Times about Faruq Z. Bey and Griot Galaxy and immediately knew I had to hear them.  Once I saw them, the blackness, power, hipness, funkiness, strangeness, sophistication all hit me hard. It was out and it made sense. One favorite remembrance I have of Faruq is me walking on Cass Ave. after school and spotting Faruq pushing his motorcycle. It was trippy seeing him without the face paint they all used.
