This LP was definitely an interesting ride. There were a lot of versions, a lot of false starts… I even stopped making music for a while because nothing sounded right. Then one day I put together a motorik beat inspired by Klaus Dinger from Neu! and La Düsseldorf. I’ve always loved Neu! and Krautrock—who doesn’t? It’s right at the start of alternative, experimental music. I adore it.

That beat came together on the DM1 (as always) and suddenly everything just began to evolve. With my music there’s always this delicate balance between being produced and overproduced, and I’m constantly trying to stay on the right side of that line.

Tracks 1, 3 and 5 are all motorik-driven pieces with weird synth textures bubbling around them. Tracks 2, 4 and 6 are individual synth improvisations made using the Animoog, just exploring what the software can do in the moment. I had a lot of fun putting this all together.

Now, I have no idea what the next release will be. I need to recharge and listen to more music. Lately I’ve been obsessed with ’50s and ’60s Blue Note jazz—anything I can get my hands on from that era. It’s endlessly inspiring.

The cover is a random photo I took in Canberra. I’m drawn to textures, straight lines and strange bits of architecture—quiet details most people walk past without noticing. Shot on a Ricoh GR IIIx.

Motorik-4

This one came together very quickly. I used the Animoog quite heavily again, with the DMI as accompaniment. I tried to be more spacious and creative with the drums this time. One thing I’ve learned is that less is more — the more complicated something gets, the less I tend to like it. The only track that gave me trouble was Track 2; originally there were a lot more drum layers, but it just never quite gelled. Simplicity won in the end.
