The highlight of 2022 for me was a sunny beach party with 300 of our friends on the shores of beautiful Victoria, BC.

This is the set I played.

It's a fun, hoppin' sonic journey that starts with some favorite remixes/remakes of timeless classics and then moves into some new territory for me, verging on Bass House. Then near the end it gets melodic again featuring some other current favorites that have received regular play this summer.

So many great tracks came out this year!

Here's a collection of my favs (plus a couple older ones). The mix definitely moves around a bit stylistically: from organic vibes into more experimental territory. Same with the energy level. It's a journey.

I'd love to hear if any particular songs really resonate with you.

Summer 2023

Just add tequila! This is a 2 hour techno mix from April 2009. It begins with Alex Unders beautiful Pasa Par, which subtley samples Suzanne Vega's Tom's Diner. The mix also features 3 gorgeous techno tracks off the new Stardust label.

Wiggle and Strut

A mellow little track that Melanie and I often wake up to.

The back story is that I was creeping around the house with a microphone one early morning before she was awake recording all kinds of stuff: a shaking pill bottle, striking a glass, creaking a door, etc. At some point she woke up and goes "SHHHHHH". I recorded that too. You can hear it all in the song. The "shhh" is at the beginning/end (plus our laughter) and all of the rhythm is from the field recordings. I jammed out the melodies over top.

GANO - Ode to Sunrise

Diving back into house and techno after some time off: I'm 1) thoroughly enjoying the experience and 2) moving a bit further from where I was. This mix is definitely on the dubbier side.

The cover art is a pic I took of a bubble in a swimming pool in Thailand. The bottom of the pool forms the grid, and there are clouds and a palm tree in the reflection.

The stars aligned for this.

Here's my mix from the Cosmic Campout on NitNat lake (rerecorded). The sun had just set and the dancefloor starting to fill. The vibe was magic for me, and I love the groove that emerged. Hope you dig it too.

[I shot the photo the weekend before at another fantastical party on nearby Sproat lake for my dear friend Carmen's 40th birthday. We had the disco ball hanging off the back of the boat.]

...from artist Mike Gano. This one's an organic adventure intertwining an "electrified" hang drum with haunting vocal stabs and a rolling groove.

Unsigned. Unmastered. Untapped.

Inspired by Bass Coast, this is a HIGH ENERGY, bass heavy mix. It's best enjoyed with a subwoofer or on a hi-fi stereo, but should still work well on the buds while working out.

Swaggin

Low in frequency and high in acidity, this well-balanced blend teases the palate with its subtle notes and satisfying finish. Best enjoyed with a subwoofer, it pairs nicely with friends and dancing.

Pschonautic

The idea for this track originally came from the old spaghetti western soundtracks, but at some point I veered back into my beloved land of electronic.

Chinchilla Dust

A gem from the back-catalog. It doesn't get much more "classic Gano sound" than this. Cue circus music.

Made completely on the Elektron Digitakt, with single cycle waveforms, this is an organic evolving textural piece representing some recent explorations into arpeggios and wave-table synthesis.

Elektronic Evolution

Recorded live from our fantastical NYE 2020 - Under the Sea party. What a beautiful scene: filled with giant psychedelic jelly fish and trippy strips of neon kelp stretching 20 feet high.

I was feeling it. Maybe even got a bit wild. It's certainly one of the highest energy sets I've played lately, but I blame the dancerfloor ! They were given'er !! You can actually hear folks hollerin' around 48m. :)

NYE 2020

Tekno Spluge

The Colorado rave scene of 2001 was his first major influence. Gano was throwing parties and spinning acid and tribal house. Then moving to San Francisco, his sound got deeper, more organic. And he discovered the Burning Man vibe via the legendary after-hours parties, like Anon Salon.

In 2007, he met his wife on the playa and chased her to Vancouver island where he subsequently immersed himself in the B.C. house and techno scene. Playing clubs and festivals (e.g. Rifflandia 2017) across the province and performing alongside world-class artists, his loyal, discerning fan base quickly grew.

Next came the TreeHouse. He and his crew built a 30' long mobile rave unit (aka mutant vehicle) featuring a 10kw sound system, 20' tall fiberglass trees (with sound-responsive LEDs), and a roof-top dj booth + dance floor. For 2013 & 2014, the TreeHouse won hearts across Burning Man with their soul-warming blend of house music.
