Multi Culti launch a new quarterly 12” series in step with the seasons beginning with SOLSTICE I:

Post-pandemic lockdown inspiration can be found in the great planetary balancing act that has taken place since a cataclysmic impact with an asteroid caused mass extinction and set our earth’s orbit off axis. This AXIAL TILT, or obliquity, is responsible for the seasons, and life as we know it has evolved around these unleashed forces. As our lives and for many, careers, have spun dramatically off axis as of late, we look ahead to the coming seasons, with the hope that we can weather the changes, and maintain inner stability.  To aid in this quest, Multi Culti promises to deliver sonic support with utmost regularity at the peak moments of cosmic significance, with each Solstice and Equinox.

Beginning this journey are some of the label’s most beloved artists. Israeli duo RED AXES provide a chakra-elevating soundtrack with their inimitable blend of psych-garage-tronica, a sun-kissed banger that signals a long-awaited return to the togetherness of the dancefloor.

In 2007 Portico Quartet moved from busking on the South Bank in London to a recording studio and, with the remains of the money from their student grants, created their first album, 'Knee Deep In The North Sea' (released on Babel/Vortex). This was a turning point for the band, the album attracted attention from DJs, bloggers and critics of every stripe, and was nominated for the 2008 Mercury Music Prize.

NEN Records is happy to present the first full-length album by Nick Larkin, a musician, DJ and sound producer from Moscow. The ‘surrender/control’ opposition, revealed in the record’s title, is a two-stroke mechanism, which, like exhalation and inhalation, sets in motion the life cycle. Systole and diastole, kick drum beat and pause, flash in the night and thickening darkness - those are the elementary particles that make up the deadly routine and fractal carnival of everyday life. Larkin draws his unique pattern by means of hypnotic A-class techno, using only analog instruments. The album, featuring experimental tracks as well as dance floor grooves, is finely complimented by two remixes – penned by Le Chocolat Noir (Croatia) and Beat Movement (Italy).

Оппозиция уступки и контроля, вынесенная в название записи, есть двухтактный механизм, который, подобно выдоху и вдоху, приводит в движение любой жизненный цикл. Систола и диастола, удар бочки и пауза, вспышка в ночи и снова темно – элементарные частицы, из которых складываются смертельная рутина и фрактальный карнавал повседневности. Ларкин рисует свой узор средствами гипнотического техно, записанного сугубо на аналоговых инструментах. Альбом, где нашлось место и экспериментальным трекам, и вполне танцевальным номерам, идеально дополняют два ремикса авторства Le Chocolat Noir (Хорватия) и Beat Movement (Италия).

‘Taihua’ is a Māori word. It refers to the intertidal zone, area between the limits of low and high-tide.

‘Taihua’ is the antechamber of the ocean.
We strode along many ‘Taihuas’ in New Zealand, searching for sounds and noises, shells, outlooks to native forests or distant islands.

We strolled by a mighty and often restless ocean. We surfed on rising tide waves and ran barefoot in the wet ‘Taihua’ of the Muriwai beach. We witnessed dusk there, and we photographed pink skies, the surface of the water as a mirror. We captured the echo of caves we could only enter at low-tide. We examined sand covered in shells that chimed like winds, and arranged them by note, depending on their size.

Then, we went deeper in the land, along the streams, still barefoot. We threw ourselves into native forests, surrounded by chatty endemic birds.

All 8 pieces of ‘Taihua’ are about hyper locality. They hold sounds harvested on site, from the crazy melodic phrases of the tūī or the piwakawaka, to the upbeat rhythmical patterns of the insects.

Humans also have a role in this story, they simply made sure they took off their shoes, and reconnected with matter.
