Through the Main Gates

Today’s foot-tapping musical philosophical challenge:  assisted dying.

The protagonist in our song might once have been on his way to an establishment such as Dignitas in Switzerland – a not-for-profit organisation providing assisted suicide services for those suffering terminal illness.

But our hero is actually booked into a fictional future Dignitas “look-alike” where there is no precondition for certified terminal illness in order to employ their end of life services.

He has simply decided that he does not wish to continue living in today’s world.  He is not a clinical mental depressive, he is in reasonably good health, physically and mentally, is financially very comfortable, fully cognitive but finds that each day, looking at the world around him brings more in terms of frustration, pain and anguish than it does in joy.  He has quite simply logically reasoned that in his (most likely godless) existence the emotional neutrality of perpetual nothingness is a better option than temporary net negativity.  Rather that do something messy and risky he decides to contract the professionals to do the job properly and painlessly (and legally).

I can see a world such as this (“Soylent Green”, anyone?) in the not too distant future, where human rights and habeas corpus combine to move humanity to a new level, sensibly offering a voluntary disembarking option to those for whom the ever-grinding scientific extension of the term of human life at the expense of the quality of human life makes no sense.  Those who simply say – “thank you, I have had an adequate sufficiency, may I have the bill please?”

Ashes to ashes.  Dust to dust.  Animal to mineral.

In a crystalline dusk I’ll walk down the lane
Dark clouds ahead, cold wind behind
Wrapped up my burden, packed up my shame
Clear in my head, fixed in my mind.
My future holds nothing but the fires of hell
When I revert back to my mineral self.

Sun kisses the horizon a shallow goodnight
