Blueprint for track that became 'Sandycove Milk'.

Inspired by wondrous music by Conin, whose track 'Kitty's Wake' reminded of the rich clay of Joyce's 'Finnegan's Wake'. This track, about the opening pages of Joyce's Ulysses, borrows coffee spoons, forever those of T.S. Eliot, in an effort to add sweet milk...drawn from the milk-well of honeyed Sandycove.  The lyric speaker is, notionally, Stephen Daedalus. For practical purposes, the lyric speaker is James Joyce himself. His aim? To hit Haines for a guinea [a pre-decimal unit of currency] before heading to France on a ferry. Whilst Haines still feels guilty (sheepish) about having fired his pistol at an imaginary cat he thought he saw in the fireplace in the Martello tower in Sandycove (now the Joyce Museum....a sacred...magical place, whose attendant Joyce scholars told me about the Haines' imaginary cat episode....it is all true...yet also dovetails eerily with the first chapter of Ulysses).

The reference to Haines having consumed Absinthe is a narrative fiction, invented to offer an explanation for his dangerous behaviour. No peer reviewed evidence capable of demonstrating Absinthe has hallucinogenic properties, exists, to my knowledge.

I came up with this funny little tune and sent it to Jeff @user-911083679 a.k.a. Stonerjazz. He sent me back this vocal track and I was absolutely floored by these incredible lyrics, delivered in such a fitting style for this song. Thanks Jeff, always such a pleasure to work with you my friend!

« Listen to the Music » es una canción de la banda estadounidense de rock Doobie Brothers , publicada en su segundo álbum, Toulouse Street (1972). La canción, escrita por Tom Johnston , fue el primer gran éxito de la banda. En 1994, recibió una remezcla de Steve Rodway, también conocido como Motiv8 , que finalmente alcanzó el puesto número 37 en el Reino Unido y el número 3 en Islandia.
La grabación de estudio utilizó un banjo y un efecto de flanger prominente , audible desde el puente hasta el fundido final. Cuando Warner Bros. Records lanzó la canción como sencillo , alcanzó el puesto número 11 en el Billboard Hot 100 en noviembre de 1972. 
El éxito comercial de "Listen to the Music" impulsó el ascenso del álbum Toulouse Street en las listas de éxitos. La canción sigue siendo un clásico de la radio de rock clásico y contemporáneo para adultos . La banda también la usa como bis en sus conciertos. Patrick Simmons , segundo guitarrista y vocalista del grupo, canta el puente de la canción.
Tras el lanzamiento del sencillo, Cash Box dijo que es "el estado de ánimo rockero más suave del grupo hasta el momento; uno que podría llevarlos a territorio de las listas con reproducción AM ". 
El crítico de Ultimate Classic Rock, Michael Gallucci, calificó "Listen to the Music" como la cuarta mejor canción de los Doobie Brothers, elogiando su ritmo suave y fluido , así como la interpretación vocal de Johnston. El equipo de Billboard la calificó aún mejor, considerándola la mejor canción de los Doobie Brothers, afirmando que "se encuentra entre los éxitos más reconfortantes del rock and roll" y que debería "hacerte bailar y dibujarte una sonrisa". 
En junio de 2020, cuatro miembros de la banda lanzaron una versión acústica de la canción en YouTube, cada uno interpretando desde su casa durante la pandemia de COVID-19 . La grabación incluyó una parte de banjo más prominente, pero no guitarra eléctrica principal ni batería. Al final de la grabación, el cantante Tom Johnston comentó que se trataba de una especie de actuación benéfica para Feeding America y compartió la URL de la organización, animando a los fans a donar.
