On A Dull Day

A folkie take on Del Amitri’s “Tell Her This” written by Justin Currie & Iain Harvie. I wasn’t aware of this Scottish band during their initial popularity but even their pop hits have some impressive writing behind them and I came to really admire this globally successful band. This song especially touched me with its insightful words which I’ve taken here and done in stripped down folk fashion.

The holy ray of light, which I withstood, would have destroyed me with its sharpness, I think, if I had turned my eyes away from it. And I remember how boldly I endured the light, until at last my vision joined the infinite. Your abundant grace gave me courage to lower my gaze into the eternal light so deeply that I succeeded in gazing - until exhaustion. In its depth I saw inwardly in a bond of love what is unfolding outside in the universe.... We are so caught by this light that we never turn away from it to something else with good will! Because the good, the goal of our will, meets all in this light. What is perfect here, becomes defective outside.

Der heilige Lichtstrahl, dem ich standhielt, hätte mit seiner Schärfe, glaub ich, mich zerstört, hätt' ich die Augen von ihm abgewandt. Massive flood devastated the lower Sumas region of Abbotsford with historic record rainfall between Nov 14-16, 2021. Basic restoration will take weeks, at best, only after the waters recede, For the unfortunate victims, who have suffered personal loss of property, homes and livelihood, the after effects of recovery will be felt for a very long time.

I'm sitting by the window on a mild winter morning. I have a warm cup of tea in my hand and wait for the sun to rise. In the backyard already work the early shift. I do not envy them. Then... a first glowing sunbeam. The morning fog lifts and gives the view into an imaginary future...

Ich sitze am Fenster, an einem milden Wintermorgen. Ich hab eine warme Tasse Tee in der Hand und warte auf den Sonnenaufgang. Im Hinterhof arbeiten schon die Frühschicht. Ich beneide sie nicht. Dann... ein ersten glühender Sonnenstrahl. Der Morgennebel lichtet sich und gibt den Blick frei in eine imaginäre Zukunft.

Listening to buskers playing in the London Underground is a joy which brightens up the commuters day. The quality of musicianship is so high and occasionally, even on the busiest day, can stop you in your tracks, so that you just have to stay and listen to the end of the performance. I wrote this song in recognition of buskers everywhere, playing their music for us all.
