The drama explores the consequences of the imprisonment of an Irish woman in East Germany before the fall of the Berlin wall. The series combines a variety of innovative storytelling and sound production techniques to create a thrilling drama linked to real historic events. Listeners travel back and forth in time, as Irish woman Claire O’Hanlon tries to make sense of her experiences as a teenager in communist East Berlin and to solve the mystery of her vanished first love, Emil.

Writer / Director Gareth Stack travelled to Berlin to research the historic locations featured in the series. There he explored the ruins of the paramilitary police barracks, where on 7th and 8th October 1989 hundreds of East German protestors were held in one of the last desperate acts of a tyrannical regime. Thousands marched as the communist government faced revolution on the streets. Those unlucky enough to be arrested were tortured by the notorious ‘Volkspolizei-Bereitschaft’ paramilitary police. These events inspired a story that explores the marks history leaves on the lives of ordinary people.

The drama is brought to life by stunning performances by the leads Mia Gallagher as Claire in 2014 and Jasmin Gleeson as Claire in 1989. These roles were developed over weeks of rehearsals with the cast, who all worked off book to create a naturalistic compelling drama.

Using extensive foley, on location recording, and binaural microphones and cassette recordings, The Wall in the Mind  captures the paranoia of one of the darkest moments in the Cold War. This is a mystery that brings us right into the minds of citizens of the most surveiled society in history. The Wall in the Mind is a richly developed story, featuring strong female lead characters, leading to a shocking conclusion.

Mad Scientists of Music is a six part, BAI funded documentary series on Near FM. The show explores the world of Circuit Bending, Chip Tune, and Electroacoustic music in Ireland. Low cost technology, recycled instruments and a new attitude to tinkering embodied by the ‘maker movement’ are helping to reinvent music. A new generation of Irish musicians raised around computers, the internet and video gaming, see noise as something to be hacked, taken apart, and reconstructed. These artists build their own instruments, whether by recycling toy keyboards, modifying video game consoles, or attaching electronics to traditional stringed instruments. They often share their music online for free, and in doing so challenge our ideas about copyright and ownership. Their playful attitude to technology finds new uses for obsolete devices and brings the collaboration of musicianship to engineering and the arts.

Episode one explores how circuit benders, hackers and artists are building teaching and education into their practice. This is a culture as much about sharing as making, and all the artists interviewed run classes and workshops (often at no charge). Children and adults alike attend the ‘maker fairs’ and hacklabs where circuit benders share tips and show off their home brew projects. This episode explores the tensions and opportunities that exist when artists seeking to make a living participate in a culture founded on freely giving. We look at how the history and technology involved are intimately connected to learning as a democratic horizontal practice, and how workshops facilitate access to these emerging technologies. We drop in on a circuit bending workshop at A4 Sounds and hear adults and children explore this new world of experimental sound. We join electroacoustic musician and instrument maker Ed Devane as he teaches musicians and non musicians alike how to improvise. Roger Gregg takes us on a tour of his radio theatre laboratory, and tells the story of how he fell in love with the storytelling possibilities of sound. Sebastian & Emma, of Dublin experimental duo 'Deathness Injection' discuss their massively collaborative performance at Open Learning Ireland.

Mad Scientists of Music - Episode 1 - 'Learning How to Listen'

Episode two explores the videogame backgrounds of a variety of Irish experimental musicians – how video game culture and ready access to technology influenced their love of music and their aesthetic sensibilities. Chiptune music in particular reappropriates not only the machinery, but also the distinctive sounds of computer games of the 1980’s, and this helps to define its unique aesthetic. Kieran Dold (Karakara) discusses the aesthetic appeal of retro videogame music. Niamh Houston (Chipzel) explains how ‘home brew’ software like LSDJ, allows her to make music from classic Game Boy portable gaming consoles. Niamh talks about completing the loop – working with BAFTA award winning video game designer Terry Cavanagh to create retro video game inspired music for contemporary ‘indie’ computer games like Super Hexagon.

Mad Scientists of Music - Episode 2 - Growing Up Digital

Episode three takes a journey into the underground world of circuit bending. Circuit benders hack children’s toys and dissect cheap archaic electronics, to produce strange new instruments. Circuit bending lies at the intersection of instrument building, grass roots activism and psychedelia. Listeners will learn about the history of circuit bending, a hobby that grew out of the the microprocessor and psychedelic revolutions in the 1960’s; and how these technological and cultural movements fused into a kind of activist musicianship.

From the work of Reed Ghazala (creator of Circuit Bending) on, musical tinkerers have been antiestablishment figures – taking technology beyond its intended uses and in the process becoming outsider artists.

Andrew Edgar explains how geographical differences in the history of consumerism influenced the musical cultures of different countries – and how he views taking toys apart as a sort of ‘sound archaeology’. Andrew introduces us to his collection of unique circuit bent instruments. Artist and VJ MarQu Vr situates circuit bending in the history of electronic music. John Leech gives us a live ‘cartridge ripping’ demo, which involves tricking a classic megadrive into producing chaotic musical sequences. We begin though, in Berlin, where writer and one time rock star Julian Gough, is making his own weird and wonderful instruments.

Part 1 - Ed Devane talks about the relationship between self taught musicians, hackers, artists and the "new music" (contemporary classical music) establishment.

Part 2 - The Dublin Laptop Orchestra introduce us to their own unique take on electronic music. Performing using digital setups with midi controllers, the group focus on making a performance which combines physical movement with electronic collaboration. 

Part 3 - Stewart Geelon of Luxury Mollusc &amp; Primal Barber Quartet introduces us to the Dublin 'harsh noise' scene, where electronic improvisers taking their queue from industrial and early 20th century avant-garde music, create challenging dark soundscapes from found objects.

Part 4 - Artist Aine Belton, talks about combining language and musical sound to enhance the impact of poetry and creative writing. Aine, a trained musician and visual artist, became fascinated with combining music, language and visual media. This work has resulted in a practice which includes instrument making and zine culture alike.

Interjection - Ed Devane talks about sound as art, the different purposes behind experimental music, improvisation from a visual art / sound art background, and the creation of work that elicits a 'sense of awe'.

This episode looks at how innovative new ways of making and distributing music are coming into conflict with our legal system. Some argue that copyright and patent laws, created to encourage innovation, are no longer in touch with how artists remix and reinterpret our cultural landscape.

We learn about the ‘copy left’ movement and new licensing schemes like Creative Commons. Ed Devane and Simon Kenny discuss their experiences having their music pirated. Meet Bernard Noonan, in many ways a typical Dubliner. In the first episode of our six part series, we follow Bernie as he struggles with life and romance after the boom.

Bernie is a former property developer, who served a brief sentence at Portmarnock prison for an unspecified offense, after his company went bust during the construction industry crisis. He’s now attempting to get his local community gardening scheme off the ground as a business – but is facing opposition from the volunteers who founded and run the scheme. Bernie believes social entrepreneurship is key to ‘getting us out of this mess’, and faces an uphill struggle to convince others of his vision. After the collapse of his company, Bernie’s marriage ended, and he now lives with his former personal assistant, Wiola. The pair struggle with adjusting to the changed power dynamics of their new relationship circumstances.

Oisin Kylemore is a pick up artist, a pro-gamer, and a troubled young man. Join him as he shows you another side of Dublin.

Oisin works for one of the ‘big three’ financial services firms in the IFSC. With no time for relationships, ‘love is just another transaction’. Oisin frequently visits his mother (his only surviving parent) at her nursing home – but seems unable unable to forge a meaningful emotional connection to her. When not working 50 – 60 hours a week at his high pressure job. Oisin indulges his hobbies: Martial Art ‘Jeet Kune Do’, and the video game Team Fighter 2. Oisin is in some ways a ‘new man’, putting great emphasis on his appearance, health and fitness; and is a follower of the currently trendy Paleolithic ‘cave man’ diet. Oisin is also part of the men’s rights movement, and considers himself an able ‘pick up artist’. Oisin has a court date approaching, resulting from a violent incident which arose out of his issues with alcohol, and it appears as though his carefully managed life might not be all that it seems.

Jolita Grīnberga a young Irish writer. Jolita struggles with a lack of creative recognition and the caprices of an unappreciative universe.

Jolita is young creative woman, originally of Latvian origin, who writes and performs on top of her day job. She’s currently attempting to become the next Kindle publishing sensation. Jolita is active member of the Dublin live action role play and burlesque communities. Despite her many creative outlets, Jolita struggles with low self-esteem and weight issues. Jolita works by day in a call centre, doing surveys for the Dept of Agriculture, and lives with her best friend Sebastian, and her cats Lord British and Noroku. She has a second job in a craft market – selling her own hand-made corsets. Jolita’s parents are members of a new religious group. Although warm and supportive, they’re eager for Jolita to marry and settle down. Jolita’s dream is to emigrate to London, to live in Camden and write for Coilhouse magazine and publish her first novel.

A Creature of Myth

Claire O'Hanlon, a respected lecturer, is tormented by nightmares of her arrest and imprisonment in 1989. In the present day - a mysterious cassette tape arrives at Claire’s home in Maynooth. The tape is a hidden recording produced during her time in Berlin, and Claire is instantly transported back to her adolescence. She decides to return to Berlin to track down the traitor recording her adolescent conversations for the dreaded Stasi. Claire’s husband Stuart tags along, worried Claire's mental health difficulties will re-emerge. Unbeknownst to Stuart, Claire has another reason to visit Berlin. Emil, the love of her life, disappeared during the protests in Berlin. Now Claire wonders, ‘Is Emil alive after all?’

The Wall in the Mind - Episode 1 - The Past Didn't Go Anywhere

In the penultimate episode of The Wall in the Mind, we slip between Claire’s memories of her incarceration in 1989 and her search for answers in the present. Claire finds the city, and her old friends much changed. Claire searches for Emil amongst the last of the Berlin squats, and becomes entangled in a police raid. In 1989, Claire is imprisoned in the notorious Stasi jail Bautzen II. Her only comfort Emil, imprisoned in the next cell.

The Wall in the Mind - Episode 2 - The People's Republic of Friedrichshain

Shortly after her release from prison in 1989, Claire believes she can see Emil in videotaped footage of the fall of the wall. In 2014, Stuart is suspicious of Claire’s new squatter friends. With the help of Nicole,  Matthaus’s activist daughter Claire travels to the Stasi Museum, to see if she can discover a clue as to what happened to Emil. This is the first step leading her back to Mörderberg, and the ruins of the barracks of the dreaded Volkspolizei Bereitschaft.

In episode 4 of 'The Wall in the Mind' we learn more about the relationship between Claire and Emil, and Claire's friendship with Matthaus back in 1989. Claire confesses to Matthaus why she came to Germany. In the present, Matthaus tries to convince Claire not to illegally pursue her former Stasi tormentor. Dead Medium Productions history: 

Dead Medium Productions, founded in 2009, is an independent producer of drama and documentary. We have released numerous radio and podcast series. We have produced programmes for Newstalk, RTE Lyric FM, Radiomade, Dublin City FM, and Near FM. Our previous series include 'Choices' a surreal comedy about mental health, 'Any Other Dublin' a satirical look at the death of the Celtic Tiger,  dark cold war drama 'The Wall in the Mind', and 'Mad Scientists of Music', an award winning documentary about experimental Irish music.

Writer / Director: 

Gareth Stack is a writer who develops work for radio, theatre and screen.  Gareth Stack is a writer, director and pioneering Irish podcaster. In 2005, while senior producer at Trinity FM, he co-created the first Irish internet TV show 'Technolotics'. Since then he has developed numerous radio documentaries, dramas and podcasts for channels like Newstalk, RTE Lyric FM as well as local and regional radio. Including the award winning series 'Mad Scientists of Music', which explored the Irish experimental audio scene. He has worked as arts correspondent for programmes like Culture File & the Dave Fanning show, developed programmes for digital channels like Radiomade, and served as communications officer for the Association of Independent Radio Producers Ireland (AIRPI). Gareth currently teaches courses in Podcasting & 'Storytelling Through Sound'. Recently he has begun creating work for stage. His last play 'Mic Drop', received great reviews at the Scene & Heard festival.

Roger Gregg is an award winning playwright, composer, audio-producer and actor. Over the past 25 years he has written for Crazy Dog Theatre, Dublin Youth Theatre, TEAM, The American National Audio Theatre Festival, Graffiti Theatre, The Razor Edge, Oberon Theatre and The Gaiety School of Acting. His plays have also been produced by New York University, the University of Missouri, the Theaterpedagogisches Zentrum in Nuremberg, Germany.  His Crazy Dog productions have won many international awards including; 3 American Mark Time Science Fiction Awards, 2 Ogle Fantasy Awards and 2 AUDIOFILE Golden Earphone Awards. In 2006 in a special feature reviewing his work, BBC Radio 4 hailed him as ‘one of a handful of truly great radio dramatists’.

The Muse Unbidden is an exciting one off drama from one of Ireland’s most influential radio dramatists. The play, a success on stage at the Collaborations festival in Smock Alley theatre in 2012, follows a group of would-be poets enrolled in a performance poetry workshop led by a charismatic and unconventional teacher. Using music and dream diaries, the participants are cajoled into finding and surrendering to their personal muses. As the workshop progresses they travel a rollicking odyssey of confession and self-revelation, giving voice to their obsessions, desires, wit, pain, and memories. For some their uninhibited self-expression leads to joyous catharsis, for others to grief and loss. The play satirises the world of performance poetry, blending music and poetry to create an original and entertaining programme. This satire on modern poetry and self-discovery, written and directed by Roger Gregg features original musical score performed and recorded by a cast of multi-talented actor-musicians.

The Muse Unbidden

The A.R.T of Television is a historical comedy about censorship, set in the early years of Irish TV broadcasting. A time when government and church fought young broadcasters struggling to innovate on the nation’s fledgling television channel. American writer Claude Chabert lands a job on the early Irish soap opera ’Home Farm’. Claude finds himself trapped between the political pressures and rigid censorship of late 1960’s Ireland. Attempting to kill the show, he resorts to improbable storylines rooted in Irish mythology, creating an unexpected hit. Now Claude must balance the demands of crafty civil servants, a meddling church and an unruly cast.

The Free School, Dead Medium Productions' new documentary about Ireland's first 'Sudbury Valley School', broadcast this morning on Newstalk. Each year, legendary radio dramatist Roger Gregg teaches a unique intensive course in radio drama. The Listening Stage follows students of The Gaiety School of Acting’s radio drama course, as they pursue their hopes and dreams of fame. This fly on the wall doc embeds us in Roger’s annual weeklong workshop, introducing actors to the exciting world of audio theatre. The course culminates in a live performance of a radio comedy. We follow the crafting of this production from initial script reading to rehearsals, to the development of sound effects and music, the creation of memorable characters, all the way through to the final performance. Taking a look, for the first time ever, behind the curtain of this legendary drama school’s radio drama workshop.
