Underwater Things

This week's Disquiet Junto prompt challenged us to a duel with a metronome: record a piece of music that weaves in and out of a steady beat. 

I assembled a trio comprising the Moog Minitaur (lead and bass), Roland Juno (pads), and Waldorf Streichfett (strings). I improvised a meandering chord sequence and spent a lot of time mixing multiple layers of analog pads to bring it to life. Against the steady backdrop of a simple percussion pattern, I recorded the lead performance on the Minitaur. Since this synth doesn't sync to the MIDI clock on the computer, riding the LFO controls manually let me improvise the swirling/cycling/beating patterns that dance within, against, and without the beat. 

About the vocals: When I was listening to the mix earlier today, I heard a momentary audio artifact that sounded like a muffled voice. This inspired me to add a vague vocal part for way back in the mix, so recorded myself reading an excerpt from "A Vision of the Night" by Ambrose Bierce.

This one was super scary to do, to do a continuation to one of the most popular tracks I've ever made, but over the years there were so many ideas where I felt we could improve on the original that in the end it turned into a great great thrillride. Keeping it a secret though... not so fun ;)

Had the beat lying around for a few years now as this originally started as an intro soundtrack that never happened, and when we postponed our intro from Revision I decided to dust it off and re-imagine it; it kinda ended up as a tribute / throwback / "wish-there-was-more-of-this" to that era of breaks that no longer seems to exist anymore - big up https://soundcloud.com/hybridscores and https://soundcloud.com/adamfreeland as usual - and I'm really happy that I was able to do it.

Case In Point

The original Amiga version of Melon-Glo-Mania, written in 1992 using Protracker. The original .mod size was 25kb.

An revisited version will be released on my forthcoming Chiptune album :)
