It's called Diary and it's wonderful. This improvisation is based on the opening track, 'To Begin'.

In March of 2018, German composer and pianist, Tim Linghaus, released his debut full-length, titled Memory Sketches. I have immediately connected with his sonic palette and the concept of capturing a memory with music [for preservation and materialization thereof], and have subsequently selected the album as one of the best of the year, in Music For Watching The Snow Slowly Fall In The Moonlight list. Brian Housman of Stationary Travels has also picked up this fragile work, and in his syndicated words for Headphone Commute acknowledged that “bring this to realization in a sincere and compelling way that deeply affects the listener requires tremendous sensitivity to mood and texture…” Of course, I tend to agree. Following the release, Linghaus appeared on Sound In Silence with a collection of “B-sides,” and then again, a year later, with a 30+ min album of sixteen vignettes, titled We Were Young When You Left Home (Schole Inc., 2019) examining [his?] childhood emotions experienced during a parental divorce. Today I am premiering a brand new track for you, this time is taken from Tim’s upcoming release titled Memory Sketches II, which, as you can tell from the title, is a follow-up to his debut, once again focusing on shaping and archiving the memories with beautiful sound.

The rhythmic journey of adolescent immediacy through rushing emotions, the discovery of new experiences, and, much later on, reflection on these initial feelings, are all conveyed in this very first track appearing on the album. On the fifteen successional pieces, Linghaus explores further recollections of heartbreak, repetitive school daydreams, and projected fantasies of a childhood long gone. The piano is occasionally gently cradled by lo-fi treatments, some strings and synth sequences and pads. It’s all rather lovely, a bit introspective, nostalgic and melancholy. Hiding (Reworks) is a unique collection of recompositions highlighting the talents of several exciting musicians, centering around a track that pianist and composer Garreth Broke wrote for solo piano called Hiding.

Hiding was first released as part of a collaboration with artist Anna Salzmann titled Healing, which explored the healing process in all its complexities. Whenever Garreth returned to the piece or played it in concerts, he kept having new ideas for it, as if the piece itself were telling him that it wanted to grow. This prompted him to invite a group of musicians whose work he admires to create a series of reworks of this composition, encouraging them to be as adventurous as they liked — a task that they really embraced, leading to some mesmerising results.

The result is this EP, in which Hiding is presented in six different forms. First, you’ll hear the original piece re-recorded on a gorgeous felted C. Bechstein upright piano, then reinterpreted by the fantastic ondes Martenot player and multi-instrumentalist Josh Semans from the UK. The wonderful Australian clarinetist and looper Ruby Lulham, aka Clariloops, offers up the gorgeous third track, which is followed by an exhilerating rework by Sweden-based Vargkvint and Jakob Lindhagen featuring wordless vocals, kantele, zither, harmonium, electric organ and synthesizers. In the fifth track, the piece is reworked into an atmospheric piano-led song sung by Vargkvint with lyrics by artist Anna Salzmann, who created the paintings that first inspired the project. Finally, Josh Semans closes out the collection with a brief but beautiful reprise.

This collection of recompositions shines a light on the unique talents of its contributors and, like a kaleidoscope, fragments of the original piece are ever-present but always shown in a new light. Hiding (Reworks) comes out on the 3rd of March, featuring artwork by Anna Salzmann and graphic design by Celia Bayo.

Composed around 2008 this is a love story, consisting of theme, passionate development and transfigured reprise, with a bit of Chopin and Debussy in the mix and plenty of key changes.  Mushy but not without integrity, form and pianistic pleasure.

Ballade For Emma

It’s been a pretty tumultuous week, full of uncertainties, anxiety, and fear. There’s more unknown up ahead, and all we can do it await its arrival. The universe has its way of making a point, and right now, humanity must submit to its will, and plan for unplanned, expected unexpected. Which is why today is a perfect day for something serene, slightly melancholy, and splendidly pure. It’s a short piano piece by a Dutch composer Mink Steekelenburg, who records under the project name Winterdagen. With the release of Clearing, we are also introduced to a boutique London label, Waterway Records, which specializes in music from film and television composers. Indeed, Steekelenburg has already achieved recognition for his film music, including two accolades from the Cannes Media & TV Awards.

"Building from simple arpeggios into something deeply emotive, 'Clearing' is a masterclass in Neoclassical composition. It combines richly detailed piano with sweeping synthesizers, all held together by Steekelenburg's singular melodic sense - melodies that twist and coil to evoke a mood of searching."
