I became tired of the narrative surrounding Syd Barrett of The Pink Floyd that he was a lost tragic figure who was a cautionary tale when he achieved so much as a songwriter and a musician in such a short space of time. 

This is my tribute to his legacy.

MOTORCYCLE IN PARIS

Hailing from Greystones, County Wicklow (via Dublin, Ireland), singer-songwriter Garrett Anthony Rice has captivated audiences with his rich storytelling and melodic sensibilities. His music has drawn comparisons to the poetic narratives of Bob Dylan and John Lennon, paired with the melodic music reminiscent of James Taylor, The Stone Roses, and more recent modern acts such as Travis and Catfish and the Bottlemen.

Following the COVID-19 pandemic, Rice took the opportunity to delve into his back catalog of self-penned songs while also devoting his spare time to crafting new works. This effort culminated in the release of his debut album in October 2023 under the alias (i) CONSULT, titled Reflections Part II: The Very Best Of…. The album has since been streamed over 130,000 times in 93 countries, earning widespread acclaim.

In December 2023, just two months after the album's release, it caught the attention of UK producer Chris Potter (renowned for his work with The Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, U2, and Richard Ashcroft/The Verve). Together, they set plans in motion to record a self-titled double album. From an initial collection of 30 original demos, 18 tracks were carefully selected for EQUINOX, which is scheduled for release in later 2025.

The recording process involved multiple trips to the UK, with sessions taking place at Kore Studios in London, Chris Potter’s home studio in Bournemouth, and gospel choir recordings at Darklands Studio in Dublin. Rice’s songwriting tackles a wide array of themes, including divorce, the American slave trade, sibling rivalry, grief and loss, and coping with the drowning of a loved one.

The first single from EQUINOX, titled My Sons, is set for self-release on February 28, 2025. Rice wrote the song as a heartfelt dedication to Peggy Gallagher, the mother of Liam and Noel Gallagher of Oasis, during their period of estrangement. The song conveys a mother’s plea for her children to reconcile, yet its universal theme resonates deeply with any parent caught between warring siblings. The track’s style and delivery evoke the timeless influences of Dylan, Lennon, James Taylor, and Richard Ashcroft.
