We are again blessed with the sights and sounds of John Beltran’s and Shane Donnelly’s Sol Set project, with the music found within set to soundtrack many a sunset meander and moonlight ponder for years to come….

Sol Set is a musical project with roots lasting back over 20 years, a space in which a number of supremely talented musicians have flocked to, with Beltran acting as the conduit for the collective’s output. Based in Detroit, Sol Set has its sights set all over, drawing influence from a number of eras, scenes and styles, with a particular affection for Brazilian funk and soul - with twists and turns thrown in along the way for good measure. The result is a body of work that expresses joy from all facets, providing sublime atmospheres and tones for listeners to loose themselves within, a captivating and absorbing sound that is carried by the highest levels of musicianship. Following the collective’s debut on ‘Earth Volume 4’ back in 2000, a long hiatus eventually bought ‘Ola de Novo’ to the fore in 2022, with a highly successful remix record following shortly after, with both records highlighting the fantastic musical chemistry and depth of ambition found within that have come to define the collective. Their universe is one of such captivating scale, an audial delicacy that can be enjoyed time and time again.

Frankfurt’s Chiwax has been responsible for some heavyweight releases by Ron Trent, Gemini, DJ Deeon, Ian Pooley, Boo Williams, Felipe Gordon and Jasper James. For the much-respected labels next release it welcomes Glasgow underground bubbler Jasper James back to the fold with his highly infectious ‘House It Up EP’. Since making his debut on Optimo Trax eleven years ago, James has notched up releases on some suitably impressive labels, including Steel City Dance Discs, ESP Institute and most recently NO ART.
 
On ‘House It Up’ the Glaswegian producers return visit to Chiwax comes via an EP that showcases the depth and variety of his solid house influences. Check first 'No Metronome', a dusty, thickset, and percussion-rich chunk of muscular deep house that reminds us a little of the great Kerri Chandler, before admiring the retro-futurist Chicago jack-track that is 'House It Up'. Over on side B, 'Mission 770' is a lightly dubbed-out chunk of peak-time deep house hypnotism and 'Do You Play House' sounds like 'French Kiss'-era Lil Louis fused with the sweat-soaked energy of Sound Factory era Danny Tenaglia and the Junior Vasquez productions.

We didn't know Jack Shit but we do now - this is a big one. Arsene's debut 7" kicked off this year with his bang-the-box underdog smash hit "Jack Shit". The song went underground-viral seconds after the test presses started circulating garnering commented support ranging from Classic's Luke Solomon, Deeper Shades Lars Behrenroth, Mark Grusane, Radioslave, Danny Krivit, Stones Throw's JRocc, Marcellus Pitman, Darryn Jones even Stretch Armstrong. Lefto debuted it on his Kiosk Radio show while a chance run-in with Moodymann at the airport seems to be the source of it's club debut. Record was sold out weeks before release date.

The Vros is a collaboration between three Chilean brothers who use traditional instruments and synths to blend hypnotic sounds from House, Electronica and World Music. Each track symbolises an element Earth, Wind, Fire and Water. The tracks connection to nature encourages self-reflection, whilst the rhythms get your feet moving. 'Space Marimba' is perfect for outdoor dancing with its happy marimba melodies and elastic bass, 'Don't Be Afraid' is pure Balearic house bliss and 'Fusion' brings subtle trance inducing chords while 'Release Your Mind' is a deep, mind-bending opener.

House music doesn’t get much funkier than Demuir’s ‘New Spirit’ EP. Whether it’s the classic sampling on the title track – an homage to his mother-, or the rolling funk bass and vocal chops on ‘Ain’t no stoppin’ ‘, Demuir brings an unstoppable groove with his 2nd release on Heist.

The man behind so many great house records has kept himself rather busy with building his own fanbase, openly debating the role that big platforms play and the firm grip they have on talent. Rather than conforming to the standard route, Demuir chooses to navigate the winding road of building his own following through his production classes, engineering and music releases through artist-first channels like Patreon.

His recent move from Toronto to Chicago feels perfectly in line with the sound&nbsp;Demuir is bringing forward on his first record on Heist since his 2019 classic ‘Werq, feel, gruv, vogue’. Those 6 years were well worth the wait: The ‘New Spirit’ EP&nbsp; is a perfectly-balanced mix of creativity, confidence and character. The Demuir sound is instantly audible throughout the release and he’s not afraid to make bold choices. Each track has its own identity, its own place on the record and it’s one of the things that make this record stand out in the best way possible. The forward-leaning grooves, the tight mixing and the classic use of soulful samples are a treat to listen and dance to. There’s hints of the 90s New York sound (New Spirit), soulful disco-tinged grooves his new home-town is known for (Ain’t no stoppin’), lean-back and summery melodic grooves (No minions allowed) and deep, bassheavy dubby grooves (Whatchu want is all I got) to remind everyone that Demuir is an absolute master of modern day house music.

We’ve been playing all these songs for a while and we’re happy to finally share these with you.

Demuir - New spirit (Extended dub)

20/20 Vision marks its 30th anniversary with another great release here in the form of some remixes of Crazy P's iconic single 'Stop Space Return'. The late Danielle Moore's unmistakable vocals shine across two stellar reworks from Colleen 'Cosmo' Murphy who infuses her cosmic, acid-laced disco energy into the track. Her Cosmodelica Remix and Dub version blend trippy 303s, cowbells and deep grooves into something suitably fresh. Also included are two classic Unabombers mixes from 2009, and they offer raw house heat and dubbed-out psychedelia that serves as a fine floor-focused reinterpretation of a beloved anthem.

Who killed JackWasFaster?

Was it the post‑pandemic skyrocketing BPMs and the slow death of soul in club music? The exhausting 90s revival — dredging up even its least glorious moments? Maybe it was the nightlife crowd: more “intense,” with Jäger‑tainted breath, white-powdered noses, and the same recycled small‑talk clichés. Or the current musical climate, obsessed with constant novelty over meaningful transformation. Perhaps it was the mainstreaming of tacky spectacle — DJs dressed as mermaids, horses, or bullfighters — a bargain‑basement sublimation of kitsch.

Or maybe it was suicide. A slow collapse brought on by the inability to find new ways to express oneself in this environment; the blur between conviction and inertia; the endless déjà‑vu; the weariness; the age. Like in Murder on the Orient Express, maybe everyone took a stab.

This posthumous EP gathers the final tracks JackWasFaster worked on, a re‑imagined take on his debut cut Bitter Pill, and a blistering remix from Anatolian Weapons. Maybe they’ll help crack the case. Or maybe one day JackWasFaster will rise from the dead.
