AUSTRALIAN LOCAL BERTIE RELEASES DEBUT EP VIA PHENOMENA RECORDS

An EP of uplifting, punchy, dance floor-ready house, drawing on sapphic history and the artist’s personal journey.

Having established herself as a palpable force in the DJ scene, Naarm-based Bertie is announcing the long awaited release of her debut EP, ‘Carabiner’ on Melbourne/London label Phenomena Records. Out now on all streaming platforms and Bandcamp.

Carabiner - Ciel’s Reoriented Dub (Releasing Soon)

Stylistically, ‘Carabiner’ draws from Bertie’s queer identity, love of groove and years of DJing, to combine the crunchy, punchy stylings of 90s house, with contemporary soundscapes and storytelling. Each track is a fusion of percussive beats, acidic motifs and euphoric highlights with an uplifting nature and groovy finish. As Bertie explains, there’s a multifaceted narrative behind the sounds:

“A carabiner is a coupling link that binds two things together. It’s a tool used by climbers to keep them safe should they fall into suspension, swinging side to side, until they find their grip once more. And most notably, it’s a sapphic symbol. One that took hold in WW2 as women entered the labour force. A multifunctional tool that became a secret signal for lesbians at a time when discreteness was crucial. One that wasn’t just about sex, but about connection, about finding community,” says Bertie.

“This is what I was thinking about when I wrote this EP. The communities that make us feel understood, the movement of life and the movement of self, both the physical and the mental, and the connections that occur when people and music come together.”

The first single on the EP also titled ‘Carabiner’ was built from noises created by the metallic clip - jangling, clicking and tingling. These sounds formed the first beat to which a melody was shaped, and three more tracks inspired, bringing the EP into fruition.

Listeners can expect a fifth track included in the release in February; a remix from none other than Xi'an-born and Toronto-based producer, pianist, and DJ, Ciel. 

‘Carabiner’ EP marks the 8th release on Phenomena Records, a label dedicated to showcasing unconventional electronic music, inspired by themes of beauty and extraordinary experiences from the world we live in. Previous releases include IN2STELLAR, Sam Alfred and Baby G.

Was resident DJ at the weekly Blast Club in Chester since summer 1988, Quadrant Park Liverpool 90/91 , Sweet Chester , Elevate Bangor   etc etc  .. Now Djing at Electrik Disko every fortnight, and throughout the summer we are in the outside courtyard area in The Commercial Bar Wrexham. Nice sound system and great location ..puurfect.
