@art-alfie, the eminent Swedish mastermind of unconditionally funky house blesses us with the privilege of two of his somewhat “out-there” house tracks. Two functional tools with maximum wonky-ness that will completely obliterate dance floors. The EP is released by Bigges District — a label run by Stockholm producers Ari Bald, Gudding and CJ Scott. Art Alfie’s enrollment on the label’s digital imprint DIGGES is a follow up on the series “Klubbdubbar”.

The EP takes off with ”Diana” — a house gadget made in collaboration with Måns Glaeser. “Diana”s ringing and chronometric synthesizer sounds and latin infused bass line stipulates a hefty and arid groove filled with color. On the flip “Libido Rising” enters. The tracks crooked and precarious character tosses the listener into a chaotic and tumultuous disposition. A brusque and wandering bassline accompanied by sprightly and agile jazz infused percussion culminates into this vigorous number.

Needing no introduction, NYC-based Baltra rose with the lo-fi house scene and has become one of the most innovative producers to come out of it, constantly pushing for a fresh sound with use of organic vocals and cross-genre experimentation. Returning for a full record on Shall Not Fade for the first time since the hazy sounds of Rendezvous EP in 2019, Baltra’s Dreaming Of A Disco EP focuses on impeccable instrumentals and infectious melodies.

The title track carries subtle manipulated vocalisations at the core of the melody which has a touch of romance and, later, just a hint of disco strings adding an 80s shimmer that explodes to the forefront in jangling guitar riffs. By the second number, ‘Imaginary Laughter’, you know this record is party-ready - it is a slow build up of ecstasy, sugary sweet. Languid keys create a woozy atmosphere in ‘Private Paradise’, a track which is a glittering and understated anthem. EP closer ‘Sunset Jam’ holds more disco influence, channelling Donna Summer into a modern style with tight vocal percussion and 303 stabs for a genre-melting climax.

Bristol boy Thrilogy makes his debut on Monologues with two typically stunning tracks from his lab. The man behind Rave On Avon Festival, the sex-positive No Strings parties and the excellent Fate & Fiction Recordings comes up roses on 'Give My Love', a rousing anthem with a real Murk / Tenaglia vibe in its big room synths and diva vocal samples that could be a big one across the festival season. The room was crowded with onlookers who had come to witness what had been described as a beautiful miracle. What could be the harm in that? For it was always a wonder to see somebody healed from hurt - to see somebody rise upwards and face the demons which had been recklessly punishing them for, oh, so very long.

An organ played softly in the background as the pastor began to mutter a magnificent spell from the stage. There were gasps and exclaims as the lights flickered and danced on and off whilst the sound began to echo and refrain between the walls of this old building. There was an eerie, ethereal presence which hung thick in the air as the small, crippled woman rose from her seat on the bench.

This was it, the moment they had all been waiting for, as she began to stand.

Hardmatter are back with more delicately crafted, elegant deep house - this time featuring two producers of determined skill and prowess when it comes to working the dancefloor. Javonntte and Malik Alston feature on this new split EP - the latter of which delivers this track called 'Stand' and guides us towards the dark and murky rooms.

Alfredo Trastulli and Marco Riff return to their brilliantly named FuckTheGovernment alias and pay homage to a true Italian house pioneer in the process… Flavio Vecchi.

One of Italy’s most integral, consistent and innovative selectors, who’s been in operation since the early 80s, Flavio cut his teeth and honed his transcendental sound at the famous Ethos Mama club, Riccione, fusing the sounds of Italo disco and US house, ushering in the new dancefloor generation in the late 80s.

Flavio remains active to this day and has been a huge inspiration for Alfredo and Marco since the beginning. To pay homage, they’ve remixed a cult unreleased gem of his from 1991. ‘Work It’ captures that transatlantic interplay between the European sound and American sound with its jacking groove, choppy disco guitar sample and warped filtered synth. Relentlessly bumping with an infectious funk, you have to question why this didn’t see the light at the time.

FuckTheGovernment pay full respect to this legacy and make up for lost time with a precision subversion. Tipping their caps at another Italian dance music phenomenon, the duo gently flip ‘Work It’ into a dreamhouse serenade where the chords sweep, the beats pop and those synths twinkle with all the necessary 2022 feels.

A magical moment where 31 years melt before your very ears, this is a reminder that some things never change; grooves will always inspire, dancing will always be necessary and the government can always get f*cked. Let’s get to work.
