Sound Collage

A studio version of a piece I wrote in 2020, revised and performed in 2022. This is a recorded version of the piece, though the live performance is similar (minus some of the panning I added to the instrumentalists). 

Obfuscape (Obfuscate and Landscape) twists and manipulates recordings taken from samples of the performers. While the early samples are taken directly from that run-through, the second half of the piece uses more heavily-manipulated samples from prior rehearsals as well as samples from synthesized string instruments playing the original material in imitation.

As you listen, ponder the titles. Enjoy how the electronics develop alongside the acoustic instruments -- directly copying and manipulating as callbacks; imitating with synthesized facsimiles; creating new sounds; and finally blossoming to lead the acoustic instruments into a new harmonic and melodic space. I don't know exactly what it all means, but I know that it's representing some facet of my journey.

   Currents began with thoughts about waves and how they incidentally align with ones of different frequencies and shapes. It remained nameless until I saw that the waving lines of music were linear, shaped more like a river than an ocean. The second movement flows directly into the third, with elements from the first movement resurfacing in both.  
   Growing up in a city split by the Missouri River, I remember a warning given about it, how the undertow beneath the surface moves so fast that it can pull things from the top down into deeper water. It was safe, however, to visit and play in the gentler rivers of the Ozark hills in southern Missouri. There are areas there where the river slows, becoming wide and flat as it approaches a formation of boulders. Shut-ins like these create small waterfalls and pools between the rocks as the water swirls and jets down the dam-like structure through countless different openings, down into a calm pool below. Later in life, I lived in a wonderfully turbulent city near the Mississippi delta and found my own undertow while shut inside my classes, yearning for when I may open into the ocean.
