At Unsound 2022, Bored Lord from LA and Ariel Zetina from Chicago - each other's biggest fans - teamed up for their first-ever European b2b set. The two artists masterfully fused together queer club sounds with '90s hardcore breaks, trance, and house, resulting in a hard-hitting combo that kept the audience on their toes throughout. Once again we hit the record button, and the ripping result is Unsound Podcast 89!

For the 115th entry in the Honcho Podcast series, we welcome Sam PV! Sam is the founder and a resident at Pumping Velvet, a London-based Queer dance party that takes place bi-monthly at LGBTQ+ venue Dalston Superstore.

Frustrated by the lack of queer spaces where you could hear both a Svek record and Kylie in the same night, Sam founded Pumping Velvet in 2018, driven by the firm belief that any barriers erected between pop and ‘serious’ dance music are entirely artificial and that there’s no such thing as a guilty pleasure. It’s this same ethos and disregard for boundaries that makes his DJ so thrilling.

This mix is a live recording of Sam's set at Kiss Me Again, a Manchester-based LGBTQ+ dance party, in November 2022.

Honcho Podcast Series 115: Sam PV

Sam is a resident at the infamous East London party Pumping Velvet which takes place every two months at the much loved Dalston Superstore. For those in the know, this is a venue with a storied reputation as one of the most influential LGBTQ+ venues in the city and has been a home and safe space to music lovers and free spirits for many, many years.

As such, the role of a resident DJ in such as space is in high demand and highly acclaimed. Only the best and the most creative selectors are given the reigns. We are delighted to spotlight and showcase one such DJ in Sam PV who has built a reputation as a talented selector who knows how to read a room with skill and decorum.

Introduced to us by a friend, this mix takes us on a whirlwind tour across a breadth of sounds, featuring both a UK influence and music from further afield. It’s a riotous selection of Garage, Kuduro, Breakbeat and beyond which firmly celebrates the modern sound of club culture in London.

Sam PV is the founder and a resident at Pumping Velvet, a London-based Queer dance party. Sam grew up in London, his tastes moulded by the city’s diverse dance music scenes: from childhood trips to Notting Hill Carnival, to formative dancefloor experiences at nights like FWD, Trash and Süd Electronic. He brings these influences to his DJing in sets that span a broad gamut of genres, tied together by a love for big drums, pop melodies and sleaze.

"This mix is a live recording of my set from the most recent edition of Vietnam's (Re)treat festival, taking place in the beautiful location of Mai Châu. The set acted as a love letter to my wonderful queer friends and family who turned up to turn out the dancefloor while I played and features a number of queer producers who's music I hold dear <3 It opens with a patient stretch of house tunes, both new and old, before letting loose with Mexican electroclash, UKG and straight up pop bangers. I hope you have as much fun listening as I did playing!"

For the debut episode of Genderfunk Radio, it only felt right to call on someone who’s been holding it down for Hanoi’s baby queers since the early days: TrinhNu—aka Nam Phung (宀 Music / Studio Adventure, Hanoi). A staple of the scene since 2016 and part of the first wave of queer Vietnamese DJs to step into the spotlight.

We could go on for days about this queen’s accomplishments, mixes, and crazy releases, but we’d rather leave the door open for you to explore more yourself—you’ll be impressed. 

About this mix, he says, ‘My mood’s been good lately, so the mix is a bit chaotic.’ Translation? A wild ride through unpredictability, moods, and BPMs—and we are absolutely living for it. 💅🏼 We couldn’t have asked for a better way to kick things off. Let’s go big! 🌈

"I'd like to ID After That by Sain Guel (coming in at 39 minutes into the mix). It's a wonderfully classy slice of garage inflected house that sounds utterly timeless, even though it only just came out in December last year as part of the iconic Thai label More Rice's 7th anniversary compilation. Miguel is from the Philippines but this tune screams 90s NYC with its shuffling drums and hypnotically uplifting vocal. Just the bit of sunshine I need to see me through this winter"

Genderfunk #3 with Luffy

From Homing:
It’s been a whirlwind the past couple of weeks. I had the absolute pleasure of playing at two wild queer parties—Sublet and Leak Your Own Nudes—right before Mardi Gras in Sydney, joined by our Homopleasure collective from Taiwan and the Unfunded Empathy collective from Sydney. After that, I hopped on a plane to Seoul for a rave gig, Permit, at a former power plant, co-organized by Taiwan’s Organik Festival. I feel incredibly blessed to have performed in front of such dedicated crowds—it honestly filled me with the most electric energy. I want to channel that newfound strength, pure joy, some sentiments and gratitude that I felt on the dance floor into this mix. Late summer sunshine in Sydney, late winter snow in Seoul, both captured, reflected in one, with my goofy queer-nergy.

Oh, and I want to introduce the world to a mega Mandarin pop star (who might not need introduction though) who is an aboriginal Taiwanese and has had a huge influence on generations in Taiwan, especially in our queer community. When she sings “You are my sister, you are my baby,” I just want to send that love out into the universe.

I came back from playing at GenderFunk this weekend with a full heart and empty battery. So for this mix I wanted to create something as bright and sunny as all the people who made this experience so special for me.

Thank you Duy, Park, Kin, Luffy, Esta, Linnea and all the rest for being such warm and wonderful hosts — and to my darling Javi, it wouldn’t have been the same without you there to hype me up in the booth.

What I have for you is a little bit of everything that makes me smile in house music. It’s a bit silly, a bit sassy, and doesn’t take itself too seriously. Full of camp. Somewhere in the middle there’s an edit of this iconic flamenco pop song, Bandido, that has been one of my favourites since 18-year-old baby me heard it at a drag show in Madrid. I love to squeeze a cheesy track or two into my mixes, and this one has a stuffed crust. I hope you enjoy.
