7.11.21- 2021 Media Justice Interns!

On Sunday 10/31, we featured Crystal Zamora and Roberto Reyes from Warehouse 508 and Jay Wilson and Jose Garcia from OLE NM! Warehouse 508 shared about Dia De Los Muertos, honoring our ancestors, and their upcoming event: Fotos y Recuerdos, on Saturday, on November 6th! Meanwhile, OLE discussed the importance of this year’s election in New Mexico and shared valuable voting resources with our community!

From September of 2013, the Social Justice and Spirituality series was created by Lucia Martinez. She was inspired by her own struggles to balance spirituality with her passion for activism and social justice. Lucia sought out people who she felt managed to unify both these aspects of their lives for this series, people like Daniel Erdman.

Thema Reed, Devont'e Watson, Joshua Horton, Jeremy Jones,  Nicole Baty, Josh Green, Avicra Luckey, Aaron Dixon, former member of the original Black Panther Party, Zain Dixon, Aja Lujan, Elijah Cage, Hakim Bellamy, inaugural Poet Laureate for the City of Albuquerque; and Kamaria Umi shared their experience and responses to recent social uprisings and the long history of systemic racial oppression in the United States.

This week on Generation Justice, we heard from Brayan Moreno and Lavina Gray, two young artists from Moving arts Espanola, about their Census campaign and getting participation in Espanola and the Surrounding communities!  And from Ahtza Dawn Chavez, Executive Director of NAVA Education Project about  making Native voices heard in the 2020 Census. 2.28.21- Raashan Ahmad &  Black Story/ Black Song

Generation Justice’s mission is to inspire youth to become media makers committed to social transformation.

Generation Justice trains teens to approach journalism from a social justice and media justice framework. This is a multi-media project that gives voice to activism– locally, nationally and internationally. The end desire of Generation Justice is that youth will leave our program more educated about community strengths and problems and that they will have the, critical thinking, inter-personal, and journalism tools to effectively work on solutions to injustice.

The youth participants are trained in radio broadcasting, blogging, video blogging, and digital story-telling. The teens go out into the community and participate in organizing/civic engagement activities highlighting grassroots community organizers, youth activists, and peace makers. They are also challenged to expand their understanding of social justice, democracy, inclusion, and equity and to use media as a tool for social change and youth activism.
