Introspekt

Introspekt is THE name on everybody's lips at the moment, and for good reason! She is an LA-based producer and DJ specializing in all things garage! 

Introspekt has an extensive CV behind her including releasing an EP on Gimme A Break records which was premiered on the iconic DJ Mag, and has remixed a tune for the lovely Eliza Rose which was released on Rosebud Recordings.

Introspekt has played more sets than there are fish in the sea, appearing at gigs and festivals across LA and throughout the states. She appeared on the Keep Hush x Warp Mode Takeover taking the roof off the place with her wobbly basslines and impeccable mixing skills which are shown throughout this mix.

Virtually, Introspekt has been on pretty much every radio station and label you can think of having featured on Swu.fm, Rinse.fm and Solitude, as well as having her own personal residencies on Balamii radio and Threads Radio. 

Introspekt is one of the best to currently do it and we are absolutely honoured to have her this week so listen in and enjoy.

Guest Mix 013 - Introspekt

This week we welcome your uncle's favorite DJ to the mix series - My Best Friend. If you like your music fast and bassy then you are in the right place, as that is exactly the sound that has gotten MBF to where she is now. MBF is a Bristol-based DJ/producer that has been taking the scene by storm at the moment, having most recently just taken the roof off of Outlook UK festival. This artist is definitely somebody you need to keep an eye out for because this year she has been taking no prisoners.

Ef Kia is currently one of Bristols main up and coming rising stars making crowds go feral with her eclectic selections containing 140 dubstep, breaks, garage, and anything in between. 

Ef Kia is founder of a grassroots label OWM sounds which focuses on 140, breaks, and garage which puts on events bi-monthly in Bristol!! She is also part of the Belladonna collective which is a safe space for women and non-binary people in underground music. 

Ef Kia is a returning artist on Genre Fluid having recently just dropped a banging 140 single on our platform titled Shut Up which is a free download so be sure to check it out!!

Guest Mix 017 - Ef Kia

Buggery grips is an icon within London's queer rave scene. He is head-honcho of Fast & Bi-furious - a club night creating spaces for queer individuals who like styles of dance music that don't necessarily fit in with the standard house and techno prevalent within queer culture. 

The Fast & Bi-furious nights have hosted a plethora of queer talent such as Angel D'lite and No Nation (keep your eyes peeled on this one) - and has also allowed Buggery Grips to solidify himself amongst them as not only just an amazing promoter but also one hell of a DJ.

Guest Mix 018 - Buggery Grips

A lifelong garage head, Ramage started as a pandemic bedroom DJ. After sharing a few mixes, he was invited to join Glasgow's Radio Magnetic roster, where he's been helming the monthly Pure Mince show for the past two years. Initially a reaction against the moody and laddish cultures of contemporary clubbing, the show has become a celebration of hedonistic joy with a camp sensibility. "Pure Mince is a mix of Scottish and polari slang that sums up what the show is about - unsophisticated, hands-in-the-air mix of big basslines, big vocals, and big energy." Outside of Pure Mince, Ramage has self-released both dance music and ambient pieces, the latter having soundtracked various exhibitions in Scotland. But for his Genre Fluid mix, Ramage is definitely playing big, bright and brash.

Guest Mix 019 - Scott Ramage

DJ Ammi storms onto Genre Fluid this week providing us with our first 100% VINYL guest mix. Expect to hear half an hour stacked full of 2-step, speed garage, and a whole lot of bass. 

DJ Ammi has quickly been making a name for themselves - especially within the Bristol nightlife scene - where they are known for their high energy, multi-genre sets, all with the cherry on top of being an all vinyl DJ. DJ Ammi has an amazing roster of gigs behind them - including playing for labels such as no_one, Brickphone Audio, Psyched, and Crotch. Additionally - Ammi co-runs a queer night in Bristol called Misscoteque - a safe raving space for women, non-binary and trans folk!! DJ Ammi took this powerhouse collective to Glastonbury Festival this year where they hosted an incredible lineup of talent in a Shangri-La takeover. 

This is only the beginning for this amazingly talented DJ and their collective of powerhouse selectas - and we cannot wait to see where life takes them next.

INTROSPEKT: Dubstep is a Feeling 020224

Last year, when we wrote that "the best UK garage is coming out of Los Angeles," we were talking about Introspekt. The US DJ, who has since moved to New York, really understands the genre—its appeal, swing and unique, bassy whomp. Listen to any of her tracks, like last year's "Forlorn," and you'll hear someone who produces like she's been making UKG all her life. This is probably partly because she comes from a dubstep background, but either way, if you're looking for new UK garage beats, Introspekt is one of the best going right now.

Her DJing also hits a distinct sweet spot, zeroing in one of the proto-dubstep, dark UK garage days when producers like El-B were making the hottest shit around. Her sound is both retro and forward-looking, as you'll hear on her RA Podcast, which balances vintage Big Apple cuts from Skream & Benga with new-school tunes from Amaliah and Surusinghe. It's not so much a throwback as it is a rejuvenation of an old sound—a new way to look at it and a new way to make it. If hindsight is 20/20, then Introspekt has perfect vision, and mixes like this are the perfect way to educate listeners, make them move and innovate a little in the process.

American artist Introspekt (@sageintrospekt) has a sound rooted in the darker side of UKG but comes at it from a unique perspective that incorporates elements of US garage and ballroom. The LA-born, NYC-based talent has now made her mark in Europe as a DJ and a producer on labels like Eris Drew and Octo Octa's T4T LUV NRG. Her style blends heavy basslines, diva vocals and well-crafted broken beats into something that harks back to the sounds that once came out of the likes of Paradise Garage and Club Zanzibar, always with a focus on bringing up her own community.

She says that the idea behind this week's mix was "to take the listener on a journey through tech-garage sonics and intergalactic dancehall rhythms." Tracks of her own and those from Skream, Holloway, Hatcha, Phuturistix and many more all plot a line through earth-shatteringly heavy rhythms from across the past, present and future of garage, dubstep and bass. It's a mix aimed at both body and head from this formidable talent and is a great taste of what to expect from her when she plays Dekmantel Festival later in the year.

"I’ve done a lot of planning for it. The theme behind the mix is ‘Past, Present, Future’, which is obviously the theme of FWD>>. There’s this idea in my music and a lot of my peer’s music as well where, as opposed to a linear, progressive idea of time, there’s this thread of more recursive or cyclical view of time and temporality. There’s gonna be a lot of deep cuts and classics, but also a lot of new stuff, and new stuff that sounds like old stuff. So that’s the theme of this mix: collapsing past, present and future into one totality."
