Though Bobby Nunn and Eugene Coplin were still teenagers in 1967 when Nunn's father William decided to start his own label, Mo Do Records, the duo didn't let their age stop them from spending their afternoons writing songs and practicing their harmonies. Their single "You Gave Me Love" was the first to be released on Mo Do, and before the label folded in the early '70s due to financial troubles, Bob & Gene, as they called themselves, had become local Buffalo, NY, celebrities. Looking for better musical opportunities, Bobby Nunn eventually moved to California to pursue his career further, singing with Rick James, releasing his own albums on Motown in the '80s, and working as a songwriter for other artists, while Coplin stayed in Buffalo and became an ordained minister. In 2001, record collector and soul music enthusiast David Griffiths came across a 45 from Bob & Gene, a cover of Marvin Gaye's "If This World Were Mine." Intrigued by what he heard, he contacted William Nunn, who then gave Griffiths all of Bob & Gene's old tapes. Believing there was possibility in the collection, Griffiths encouraged the family to allow him to get them released. Daptone Records, a label that specialized in funk and soul, took interest in what Griffiths presented them, and released the full-length If This World Were Mine... in 2007, shortly after the elder Nunn's death.

A short expedition into the much overlooked tipica cumbia sound of Panamá

The heartache, melancholy and joy in the Panamá Tipica sound is hard to match and like no other to experience. It comes from a rich background of regional musical traditions, carnival rivalry and hotbeds like the legendary 'Festival en Guarare'. As I understand it, Panamanian cumbia was first played on violin until the arrival of accordions on the Isthmus, most early acordeoneros were violinists first and foremost. This mixtape comprises of some of the best 45s from the Herrera and Los Santos provinces, from the mid 50s through to late 60s. Over the last few years I've had the good fortune to meet several of these wonderful artists. Featured here: Dorindo, Papi Brandao, Oswaldo,Fito Espina, Ulpiano, Ceferino and more... Mixtape: TIPICA Sound

This is a selection of a handful of Angolan 45s that have proven their spirit & longevity in my record collection. Here's to the slap-echo guitars, scratchy dikanza, hope, aspiration and musical beauty that flowered from Luanda. This sound has long informed the systems of Barranquilla and parallels cumbia, samba & compas in sonic ancestral synchronicity.

This was burned wrong and posted wrong for the album Separation of Church and Wafflehouse. I think this is the theme to brown eyed girl? not sure he rift is famous, i can play it on any out of tuned guitar it is my super power, when I played it in front of my friend a while ago, he was like yuk sounds more like "brown tongue girl" but he also really loved it, it just didn't sound like a sweet girl. I figured I should record it.
