Denver's @ilind is the mind behind Abstract without Abstraction, a mix series "dedicated to deepening listeners relationships to time, liberation, joy, and resistance within the teeming entanglements of contemporary music." The series' genre-defying ethos and attention to detail constantly pushes artists to bring the same qualities to their contributions, and ilind's sets, too, are full of surprises, unabashedly drawing from a deep and varied catalogue of influences while still respecting the moment, and consistently invoking a sense of queer psychedelia.

"I generally take a very long time to put together mixes, punctuated by frenetic periods of activity and inspiration. This was no different.

I decided to answer the interview questions you provided before starting to explore the shape of the mix, and it came out colored by a really nonlinear sense of nostalgia; weaving together recent tracks by people that have been incredibly inspiring to me, bookended by older music that I have been listening to for a long time that I wanted to finally pay tribute to (namely jazz and Clicks & Cuts-era microhouse).

That said, I practiced a handful of times over a course of a few weeks, feeling really uncomfortable with the playlist and making little changes to it, until I finally rushed home to Denver from a trip to Phoenix, AZ — moving my flight up 5 hours to avoid landing in the middle of a snowstorm — just to record it straight through with no edits on my little Pioneer XDJ-RX. The mix has some really rough transitions in it (!) but a stream of emotional peaks that made it completely rewarding for me and interested in sharing it."

Influences: 
If I can be honest, seeing DJ Marcelle in 2019 was a life-changing moment for me. It's such an incredible honor to be contributing to a series that she- and so many of my other influences- have contributed to.

In a strange and somewhat obscure way that I'm not sure comes through in any legible way, this specific mix was influenced directly by two mixes from the last year: ADAB's Neptunian Influence mix and Lychee's SIREN mix. In a sense, I am responding to the feelings that both of those mixes inspired in me.

At this moment, I also think it's important for me to acknowledge the extent to which I take inspiration from, and find solace in, the work of non-violent anarchists the world over, in their diversity of tactics.

Affiliations/Residencies/Projects: 
I help facilitate a project called Abstract without Abstraction (AW/OA) (@awithouta). It is a small mix series and fledgling space for releasing music and art at an unrushed pace. I fit it in when I'm not working my 9-5, helping edit a publication called 'continent', or working on my own writing, which is primarily about sound, the occasional record review, and translation work on unheard voices in the history of experimental music & philosophy. 
AW/OA is currently going through a bit of a metamorphosis, as I spend most of my time working on a longer-scale project-- establishing an artist's residency in rural south-central Pennsylvania for queer makers and thinkers to find space for their work. I hope to see you there one day. If you're in that part of the country, please reach out to me.
