Arie Dixon is serving up more on his ‘Jacked’ album. Who was ‘got’ this week? England’s own Kooks were the victims. Their song, ‘Sweet Emotion,’ was the funky groove held up at gun point and taken to better horizons. The original song is a good one; it might be about as funky as four white boys from East Sussex, England can get. Arie’s take is funkier; melding sounds like Michael Jackson and CeeLo Green with straight ahead hip-hop like the Roots. Somehow Arie’s version sounds more organic, which seems counterintuitive because it was a remix of a song that was not his to begin with. I am reminded of Eddie Hazel’s version of the Beatles, ‘I Want You(She’s so Heavy).’ No one will deny the merits of the original; I mean it is the Beatles for god’s sake. But Eddie Hazel, with Bootsie Collins in-tow, took it to much funkier heights. It’s as if they sanded down the edges and coated it with something viscous—in similar fashion, Arie has taken something good and altered it slightly. And though his version of ‘Sweet Emotion’ is more complex, it seems far easier to digest.

There are times in life when we’re just running on autopilot.
The days keep moving, we get things done,
but inside we feel tired and far away from ourselves.

Our battery is almost empty,
but the world around us stays loud and demanding.
We long for a break, a moment to breathe,
for that feeling of actually living instead of just getting through the day.

“Ghosts in the Machine” is about exactly that phase:
when we turn our feelings down,
just so we can handle everyday life,
and slowly start to feel more like a part of a machine
than like a human being with dreams and depth.

And still, there is something left inside us.
A small, quiet spark that reaches out for light.
A feeling deep down that there must be more than just functioning.
That belief that we can find our way back to ourselves
is what keeps our hope alive.

From there, my own interpretation of Xenoben’s “In Delirium” picks up –
a piece that stayed with me
when I was in that same state of pure functioning.

With both tracks, I want to remind you of this:
Your own light is still there, even when it feels quiet.
No light in this world is more important
than your true self –
and that self is worth more than just existing.
It deserves to be truly lived.
