Injazero is a forward-thinking boutique label straddling Instanbul and London via the impeccable mind of Siné Buyuka. And I’m not just saying that because she also released my album. The diverse and boundary-pushing output of the imprint includes music by Matt Emery, C. Diab, Heinali, KMRU, Hinako Omori, and most recently a collaboration between Tegh & Adel Poursamadi. So I’m always tuned into what Injazero is up to. And this time, I am more than pleased with their latest! Halina Rice is a London-based electronic musician and AV artist, with a debut, titled REDUX released back in 2017. It may have just slipped passed my ears, but it only takes one listen for them to prick up! This is modern electronic music at its finest. Deep rolling bass, sharp synthy stabs, and incredible atmospherics make up this cinematic journey into a mind expressed through ELISION – a fusion of the abstract and real worlds, combining synthetic with organic in music, art, and technology. “The idea is to evoke places that don’t exist – like a surreal parallel world,” says Rice about her sophomore release. “Fracture” is one of my favourite pieces, which is why I selected to premiere it for you here today – it encompasses the fragmentation of reality through jittery and elastic elements, which seem to come in like waves, to unsettle and heal. Further on the album, Rice explores sound through a range of styles, anywhere from experimental IDM to dancefloor hitters, with a nod to artists such as Rival Consoles, Max Cooper, and Jon Hopkins. And if any of these names tickle your fancy, you’ll be in love with Halina Rice.

Georgian artist Rezo Glonti's debut on Muscut is the label's first take on far Eastern Europe. “Subtropics” was made during sea voyages between subtropical ports. Delicate sound design and ambient experimentations manifest themselves as an audio excursion of the Black Sea region. Currently, Tbilisi-based Glonti has several albums and EPs under the name and the moniker “Aux Field".

As Moon Diagrams, Moses Archuleta takes a few comfortable and casual steps away from being Deerhunter’s co-founder and all-around percussive extraordinary to spend some quality time with a few hidden pleasures. 

Sketch for Winter IV: Care Package, Moon Diagrams' debut release, rounds out our winter cassette series in a paced propulsion of braced percussion and muted melody, burning off any residuals from the receding autumnal embers. The slow and steady rhythm of "Scratch the Snow" trots along with steadfast subtlety, ushering along the striated synthesizer chords that chop through the air with Reich-ian precision and Kompakt-esque modernity. As the frost begins to creep in, Archuleta lights a low fire in the form of warm, tonal throbs and doubled over drum loops. Soft shards of sound invert themselves in intersecting, omnidirectional lines. The overall effect is palindromic - gentle waves of headphone electronica, without the tired connotations the tag denotes. The organic, pulsing hum rides its course in an unencumbered drift before dissolving into a heartfelt and heartbroken interpretation of "Sweet Surrender," a modern pop classic that unassumingly carries a formidable baggage all its own. 

Archuleta strips away certain components of the original version, leaving plenty of room for the song's tragically catchy and forlorn melody to smear itself over his canvas. Traces of sound blur into one another as the track plays out with the cues presented earlier on the tape. As the song drives itself into a forlorn bliss, you can't help but fall for the beautiful despair. 

The B-side-long "Elurra Urratu" plays the lushly elusive counterpart, existing in the tonal plane of orchestral, krautish ambient music. Accompanied by a roiling rhythm of gated noise, the chordal display bows it's muted melodrama across the canvas. Think Stars of the Lid remixed by Axel Willner, or Aphex Twin's "Donkey Rhubard" retooled by Donnacha Costello. 

Archuleta's thawed beauty provides safe haven from winter's retreating cold.

Hot on the heels of the first single from Jazzanova’s forthcoming The Pool album is a package of remixes of it that are designed for DJ sets. One comes from New York’s Photay, and the other is from the Jazzanova DJs themselves.

Photay is a producer known for his meticulously crafted grooves and heavy use of field recordings. Ninja Tune, Infinite Machine and Astro Nautico have put them out and the skilled live drummer released his Onism album to great acclaim just last year.

His innovative remix of ‘Rain Makes The River’ feat. Rachel Surmanni reimagines it as a spacious and shimmering piece of electronica. The vocal is sped up during a big crescendo, then bold bass notes and rubbery synths dart about with real energy. It’s a clean, intricate track with plenty of echo adding a dream-like feeling as the future pop grooves and sprinkling of percussion carry you away.

The come Jazzanova themselves, who rework the track in order to fit it into one of their storytelling DJ sets. Their version is a heavy one with weighty drums and big hits setting a slow and sombre groove. The original’s vocals loom large and tons of reverb make the track even more poignant. Some filtered vocals, fizzing synths and busy claps and clicks bring all flesh it out and make it a high impact broken beat track designed to awaken any dance floor.
