In the latest episode of our monthly podcast series RELEVANT PARTIES, host Chal Ravens delves into Detroit’s rich musical history, exploring the world of @mahoganimusic, the label founded by iconic DJ and producer Kenny Dixon Jr., better known as @moodymann313.

Since 2002, the imprint has drawn on the musical soul of Motor City. Its output incorporates a slew of genres – house, hip-hop, jazz, funk, soul – with a catalogue that features music from the likes of @ampfiddler, Celebrity BBQ Sauce Band, @dezandres, @jdilla, Rick Wilhite, and of course Moodymann. Over time, the label has become both a cornerstone of the city’s music scene, and symbolic of Detroit’s seminal contribution to global dance music culture.

In the 12th RELEVANT PARTIES episode, UK music journalist Chal Ravens speaks to Traci Washington and Florence J. Leigh (@floreal1), the women who keep Mahogani Music running from their respective bases in Detroit and Vienna, Austria. They reflect on their unusual roles as caretakers and collaborators on this resolutely underground label and on the unique artistry of the label’s founder. The episode also features insights from label staples such as Amp Fiddler, Dez Andres, and Norma Jean Bell.

This episode marks the end of RELEVANT PARTIES Vol. 2. The podcast will return in Fall/Winter 2021 with a new season and format, which explores cities that have impacted our musical landscape and the subcultures that underpin them. Stay tuned.

About Emmanuel Daniel
Emmanuel Daniel is an author, advisor and a global thought leader on geopolitics, the future of finance and their impact on business and society. He was listed as a top 10 global influencer in the “Fintech Power50” list for 2021 and 2022. He is also a model train enthusiast.

Emmanuel was trained as a lawyer, has degrees from the National University of Singapore and the University of London, and attended a course on economics at Columbia University in New York. He divides his time between Singapore, Beijing and New York when not traveling extensively.

Mathis aka "the intern" is a DJ and producer who has found his musical home somewhere between dusty jazz samples and raw hip-hop beats. Rather than coming from the classic hardware school, he grew into music production through software – but his heart soon gravitated toward the analog. With a refined sense for musical finesse, Mathis digs through crates of forgotten records from around the world, always searching for music that moves, for that special moment that tells a new story. His approach to hip-hop is not just technical but deeply emotional: sampling as an art form, a tribute, a reinterpretation.

Currently, the intern is working on a new project with Otis Mensah, building on their joint debut "Before The Noise My Cousin" – this time with more live instrumentation and even more soul. the intern makes music for people with open ears and open hearts – discovered from the past, lived in the present.
