Dubmission celebrate the release of Pitch Black's Futureproof on vinyl by going back to the era that it was made, the late 90's. MIKE from PITCH BLACK's selection features some of the tunes he was listening to at the time of recording, while Dubberson from Kog Transmissions, the original label, has made a mix of late 90's New Zealand electronica.

To celebrate the vinyl release of Pitch Black's debut album, 23 years after it first came out, Mike decided to look back at some of the music he was listening to as Futureproof was being developed. Enjoy an hour long sonic journey from 1996 to 1998, taken from some of the CDís Mike shipped to London when he moved there from Auckland.

MIKE PITCH BLACK | Dubmission Records series Ep. 16 | 30/06/2021

The Dubmission Records series goes 'Pitch Black' in this episode. Pitch Black are Michael Hodgson and Paddy Free. Having pumped their way through New Zealand’s electronic music scene since their inaugural performance at The Gathering New Year's Eve festival in 1996, they have spent the subsequent years rousing dance floor punters, generating rave reviews, winning awards and gaining thousands of fans across the world for their dub drenched electronica. Hard to box into a single audio 'genre', Pitch Black is a combination of musical journeys. Their sound is distinctive; ranging from organic ambient beginnings and layered soundscapes to skanking keyboards, cutting acid riffs and thumping rhythmic grooves, with dub being the glue that holds their sound together. One critic has described them as like "Orbital meets King Tubby, or Rhythm and Sound in Technicolor". Pitch Black created this mix to celebrate the release of the Gaudi-compiled Sub Signals 2. Over the last few years they've had the pleasure of working with Adrian Sherwood on a number of remixes, and it was great to be able to add another one to the list, with added horns by David Fullwood (Ital Horns).
