I've had somewhat of an epiphany. After spending the day with a dear friend, exploring music and sound from our salad days to the present, it dawned on me that pure joy can be experienced via these sounds.
Fortunately, or not, I'm a political news junkie. This role comes with a lot of baggage, most notably that I tend to internalize the unjustness of our world. With Mother Russia in full blown aggro mode, a recent article about future evolution of our species caused me some distress. Seems as though we're pretty much at our limits of what can be expected of us as sentient beings. Coming from the most war-mongering states of modern times, it isn't lost on me that I doth protest too much. But shit, things gotta change! 
I yearn to be a good human that is informed and inclusive of all. I welcome you all to join me in being agents of change. It's undeniable that most musicians are producing and publishing their content these days. Even though a minority of artists earn the lions share of money distributed to artists, independent musicians continue to grow their percentage of the pie. In 2019 independent artists average $12,860 a year off music, and label artists earned an average of $23,913.
Considering all of the work doing writing, practicing, recording, publishing, touring, and promoting that seems like shit wages to me. As the distribution of music evolves and exists on multiple platforms, history repeats itself by screwing the artist. We can alleviate some of that pain by buying albums and attending their concerts.

The Brainstorm Radio Show 04/02/23

Hello, dedicated followers of strange sounds.
This week on The Brain Storm is dedicated to improvisational and experimental music. Musicologists believe that these music genres originated in Europe and New Orleans. The former came from the Roman Catholic church and their use of chants and polyphony in their songs, and the latter with the development of the earliest jazz performances in the late 19th century.
Here are a couple of gleamed paragraphs that might pique your interest in these genres.
mprovisational music is expressing yourself freely within a musical piece of music and not following an established manner of playing that piece. It is creatively playing without or with less restraint and allowing for more expression from the individual. To improvise in music helps sharpen creativity as an exercise or relaxation technique.
Experimental music is notable for its tendency to abandon the traditional structure of rhythm, melody, timbre, and tempo in place of either improvisation or deconstructive intent. Because of this, experimental music is frequently confused with avant-garde music; the key distinction, however, can be found in the innovative nature of avant-garde music, while experimental music usually is characterized by its playfulness and discovery without intent.
I've added a couple of pieces from Ure Thrall and Ramona/Dusty/Mr. Lee who were plying their unearthly tones in Houston in the 80s. Hats off to David Dove who has been a great instigator of all things improvisational and experimental currently in Houston. And to the many artists involved locally who make this scene a burgeoning one.

The Brainstorm Radio Show 01/07/24

Hi, y'all.
This week Dr. Dan and I have collaborated on a very cool soundtracks-only show. Originally live orchestras or in-house pianists performed alongside a film. They say that the reason for that was twofold - a way to mask the din of the projectors and to immerse the audience in the action by fusing sound and image.
When talkies arrived on the scene in the 1930s it allowed filmmakers to add composers to the mix and write music for a particular film. Max Steiner was the first to do this with the release of King Kong.
We've chosen some iconic and some obscure titles to give you a taste of how our musical minds work. Enjoy.

Hey Y'all. KPFT is having a fundraiser and I need your donation in order to continue to be relevant in this sad, cruel world.
One must always go back to whence it became. For me, if you skip nursery songs, my folk's anemic record collection, cartoon soundtracks and compulsory religious hymns, it was rock and roll that got my pre-teen blood boiling. The selections afforded me in the mid-1960s were predictable and somewhat lacking considering what was being produced in those halcyon days when stereo FM radio became highly responsive to new music some of the neglected genres of yesteryear.
Per usual This program gravitates towards the overlooked or the obscure or the ignored and naturally I've snuck in a few cuts that defy compartmentalization.
