Welcome to THE SUNRISE SESSIONS, a brand new mix series curated by Plastic Fantastic.
Volume One, kicking off the series with a mix from yours truly (Plastic Fantastic). This mix is very much a hats-off to José Padilla as I’ve included several records that he played at the Café Del Mar in Ibiza back in the good ol’ days. By the way, if you haven’t already watched In Memory Of José Padilla - The Godfather Of Chill on Youtube, I highly recommend seeing that first as this mix is kind of a follow-up to that.

José Padilla was and still is a huge influence on me as a DJ, in particular his early to mid nineties period as resident DJ at the now iconic Café Del Mar in Ibiza, where he would provide an eclectic, emotive, chilled and yet simultaneously powerful soundtrack to the setting sun. Anyone who was fortunate enough to be there back in the day will eagerly testify that they experienced something truly special. José sadly passed away in 2020, his musical legacy and pioneering spirit will live on. 

You may recognise some familiar records in this mix, such as Mike Oldfield’s ‘Tubular Bells’ (theme from The Exorcist) and ‘Moments In Love’ by Art Of Noise alongside plenty of perhaps lesser known gems. Just to mention a few, Propaganda’s opus ‘La Carne, La Morte E Il Diavolo’, and the rather blissful ‘Island Sunrise’ by Software. The Balearic connoisseurs amongst listeners will enjoy Elkin & Nelson’s sublime latin jam-out ‘Vamonos’, and yes of course I play the record in its entirety (nine glorious minutes!). This record by the way is an absolute Ibiza classic; Alfredo would frequently drop it at Amnesia back in the 80s, truly powerful stuff. Jazz guitar virtuoso Pat Metheny’s ‘Sueno Con Mexico’ closes the mix on a dreamy note, quite literally… Fun fact, Metheny recorded the LP that particular track was taken from right here in Oslo.

Thursday Afternoon in Balearica - Special Guest: Howler

This month we have a bit of a mammoth selection of music, in part due to there being so much great music out there and also this month coincides with pulling together music for the opening of Chow Down. Usual proceedings with the ReFrame kicking off the show for the first 2+ hours  with a summer kissed eclectic selection featuring music from:

We then welcome UFO Club also known as Ben Lewis to those close to him. Ben is resident DJ for Crossed Wires and Outlaws Yacht Club both Leeds based and produces music under the moniker UFO club with recent releases of Invisible Inc and Paisley Dark records. In his own words ‘Its Italo Disco in style’.

It’s a belter and moves this months episode into the night time hours. Thanks Ben

With this mix/selection, I’ve tried to capture in 90 minutes what you might experience at any given festival of your choice. Obviously all festivals are very different but I hope
it can at least take you on an eclectic genre hoping trip for an hour and a half or so.
Chilling, waiting for friends, sat outside a tent which gently wafts spacey dub our way. Caught in the wind, sun beating down, not a care in the world.
Dub progresses into something more experimental. Toes tapping, heads nodding, sun still beating down and time a thing we left behind.
The avant garde spaced out psychedelia gives way to something more soulful, laid back yet uplifting and still, the sun is with us all the way.
Limbs loose, toes twitching. Shuffling round to some tribal afro rhythms. Getting there now. Smiling faces, warm larger, uneven ground. Glad we brought our boots.....and of course our shades too.
Tea time. Best get some food. Fuel for the night ahead. Sit on a hill, eating whist watching a band play covers. Comical lyrics about taking drugs. Who’s got what and when do we start ? Now we start to care.
Changed, refreshed and out for the night. Glammed up with walking boots. Disco balls, shiny tops, bodies swaying, faces smiling.
Things getting serious. No more sun. Lazar beams, deep bass, hugs, here comes the drop, arms in the air......yes we’re finally there !!!!
Back at the tent. Fire, waffle, gibberish, chilled tunes from outta space. Empty cans, embers, a chorus of snores. Daylight creeps upon us, mist rises from the fields. One more spliff then call it a night.
Tomorrow we go again !!!

Music obssesed since 1976. Buying and collecting albums as a 12 year old. His earliest influences in the late '70s and early '80s were Tangerine Dream, Aphrodite’s Child, The Who, Pink Floyd. George started his DJ career aged 14.His eclectic mixes contain balearic, disco, house, ambient, jazz and rock. He plays what he feels and he loves. His sets nowadays are what most would describe as Balearic/Eclectic but with a healthy dose of electronic throb. Expect chuggers, slipped disco and wonky edits usually between 80-120 bpm depending on the time he plays.
George is a Budapest based curator of the Quality Music Lovers Society group on Facebook. He has been a contributor to the ever reliable Balearic Social radio show on Purple Radio, plays at the Outlaws Yacht Club in Leeds, was a guest DJ of the Balearic Assassins Of Love team in Ibiza and a contributor to the Network show on Box Frequency, Balearic Ultras, Eclectics.
He hosted his own monthly show ’The Sound Of The Quality Music Lovers’ Society ’ on Boxfrequency.fm radio where he played  choice music, accompanied by famous guest DJ's. The show has moved to GraffPUNKS Network radio. It is broadcasted  every last Saturday of the month.  George currently hosts a a weekly QMLS  Show as well on GK radio every Thursday afternoon.
Beside his own radio shows he provides guest mixes for other radio shows all around the Globe. 
George has been played  at ALFRESCO festival int he UK, at DivadelnÍ Flora festival in Czech Republic, has been  played b2b gigs with John Paynter (A Space Age Freak Out) at The Golden Lion Todmorden and Love & Death club Belfast, he was a guest DJ of the Balearic Assassins Of Love team in San Antonio Ibiza. He regurarly plays with his friend DJ Papa Aron at his winery on the ’Very Sundays’ events.
