Liminal Zones is by young Bratislava based ear scratcher Jonatán Pastirčák. Marking a significant paradigm shift in Proto Sites' sonic geography Pastirčák pushes things into territories of hi­res electroacoustic energy, contextualizing neo­futuristic aesthetics into vast textured landscapes of distorted cello, synthetic wines and organic crunching paths. At its core, Liminal Zones floats through recognisable sonic objects; acoustic voices mimic electronic processing and vice versa, creating a fragile simulacra in constant flux. Some elements, like recordings of airflow through huge Organ pipes were picked up during an artist residency in Stavanger, Norway in 2015.

Up until the closing track 'Illulisa', the EP moves in rather entropic fashion, It’s a work of high dynamic and visceral contrast. The opener 'Train Fuck Koto' starts with ambient hum quickly masked by what seems to be a binaural recording of metallic origin. Koto strings with glimpses of harmony surface and are cut by layers of textured hiss, pounding bass and heavy tonalities. With 'VVR Asylum' the sonic topography of Liminal Zones gradually cracks and opens towards higher level of sparseness and abstraction leaving behind visions of spaces fluctuating to the vibrating heavily distorted subs and dripping synths. A staccato beat ruptures the atmosphere, caustic and raw.

Eerie synth lines crawling around, striped down nonlinear beats and off­ kilter high­-hats then dissolve into ‘Maranat’ a six minute deep dive into the abyss. Rapid screeches slice the thick air. Sharp sonic attacks are scattered around the spectrum. As everything is about to peak over the edges when we are then dissolved into the final fully acoustic chapter of 'Illulisa'. It is an act of freeing these elements from their fundamental environment and placing them in a breathable, sparse, new space.

With America’s National Parks, visionary composer and Wadada Leo Smith offers his latest epic collection, a suite inspired by the scenic splendor, historic legacy, and political controversies of the country’s public landscapes. Writing for his newly expanded Golden Quintet, Smith crafts six extended works that explore, confront and question the preserved natural resources that are considered the most hallowed ground in the U.S. – and some that should be.

America’s National Parks was released shortly before Smith’s 75th birthday in December, arriving, coincidentally, in the midst of celebrations for the centennial of the National Park Service, which was created by an act of Congress on August 25, 1916. The spark for the project, however, came from two places: Smith’s own research into the National Park system, beginning with Yellowstone, the world’s first national park; and Ken Burns’ 12-hour documentary series The National Parks: America’s Best Idea.
trumpeter six-movement"The idea that Ken Burns explored in that documentary was that the grandeur of nature was like a religion or a cathedral," Smith says. "I reject that image because the natural phenomenon in creation, just like man and stars and light and water, is all one thing, just a diffusion of energy. My focus is on the spiritual and psychological dimensions of the idea of setting aside reserves for common property of the American citizens." 

His 28-page score for America’s National Parks was penned for his Golden Quintet, a fresh reconfiguration of the quartet that’s been a keystone of his expression for the last 16 years. Pianist Anthony Davis, bassist John Lindberg and drummer Pheeroan akLaff are joined by cellist Ashley Walters, affording the composer and bandleader new melodic and coloristic possibilities. "The cello as a lead voice with the trumpet is magnificent," Smith says, "but when you look at the possibilities for melodic formation with the trumpet, the cello, the piano and the bass, that’s paradise for a composer and for a performer." 

While these preserved landscapes offer the inspiration of powerful natural beauty, Smith’s always open-minded view of the world leads him to find that same inspiration wherever he is. "Every concrete house is from nature," he says. "Every plastic airplane that flies 300 people across the ocean comes out of nature. Every air conditioner conditions a natural piece of air. I think that the human being is constantly enfolded in organic nature and constructed nature, so I’m constantly inspired, inside the house or outside the house."

Following on from last year's SEEKERSINTERNATIONAL presents the RaggaPreservationSociety EP, the first Diskotopia release of 2017 is the 3rd solo album from label co-founder Matt Lyne under his A Taut Line moniker.
 
More familiar to some as one half of Greeen Linez, Matt Lyne has also been producing very different sounds as A Taut Line for well over 10 years now. Distraction Provisions is his 3rd album release after 2013's Nitriding Portrait and 2015's Mutual Prints.
 
Initially not made to evolve into an album, the early workings of this collection were emotional reactions to the bleak social and political situation that unfolded throughout last year, and you can hear expansions of some of the more listenable of these sketches on tracks like Estado Encontrado, m15ntet and Arriving at the Lake. However, as desolate as some of the moods are on here, last year was one of intense mixed emotions as Lyne's first child was born, and there are also moments of sheer beauty, joy and redemption on this album too – the lush-yet-grainy pad-wash of A Perpetual Medium and the luminous tropicália syrup-tech of The Soft Touch being two examples that reflect that.
 
As residents of Japan are particularly aware, when two tectonic plates, or warm and cold air masses collide, there are very adverse results. When conflicting temperaments clash here, the product is the brutal choler in tracks like Purest Health2 (originally titled: A Taut Line in a Lairy Stress) and the weird dismantled hardcore-dying-at-samba-parade mess of Intertransmission.
 
Other notable tracks include the bleepy rave-tempo chalk dust electro number Hatsudai - although made as a tribute to those in the underground tirelessly keeping the declining Tokyo club scene alive (in the face of it being asphyxiated by industry players self-congratulating their own relentless mediocracy) - curiously illustrates an unexpected sense of optimism, albeit murky and dripping in paranoia, that does stealthily lie in places throughout the album. This same optimism can be found in the locked middle section of FebruarySnow, even though frozen in the centre of metallophone-led icy dub-techno melancholy.
 
But how to characterise the album as a whole in one effective soundbite? As Philip Sherburne wrote in Spin Magazine in 2013 of Nitriding Portrait - "What kind of music is this, exactly? Half a dozen listens in, and I’m still not entirely sure." - although Distraction Provisions has amalgamated mutant remnants of house, jungle, jazz funk, industrial, and new age 4th world neo-classicisms, once again, we're still not entirely sure either.

The 3rd piece for George Hurd's "Echolocation" project, this iteration was created specifically for Codame, an art + tech organization based in San Francisco. Created an interactive piece for their 3D Web Fest with visual artist/coder/tech wiz Juan Miguel de Joya. The full piece was premiered and performed on June 30, 2017 at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco (watch performance at https://youtu.be/u-Qxs5FePBs), and included projections that visualized the music within digitally illustrated imagery of San Francisco that reacted to Hurd's playing. 

The piece itself consists of iconic field recordings collected around the city, including but not limited to: numerous foghorns, the BART train, the F Line bells, the Cable Car Museum, the seals at Pier 39, Chinatown street noise, the Wave Organ, the sounds of the harbor at Marina Green, MUNI bus sounds, waves in the Bay, and so much wind, wind, wind.

Of the two works presented in this remarkable album, Mass Transmission—in
its world premiere recording—is a particularly winning example of Bates’ use of “electronica,” blended here with music for mixed choir and organ. Sirens, lacking electronica, still achieves mesmerizing vocal effects through its complex scoring for 12-part a cappella choir.

Grammy-winning choirmaster Ragnar Bohlin and his superb chamber choir Cappella SF deliver astonishing performances that will not only thrill Bates’ growing legions of fans, but serve as an ideal introduction to Bates’ unique electronics-enhanced music for those unfamiliar with his art.
