A Fleurieu & Kangaroo Island Sound Map site:

~ Short version of field note: 

This church ruin sits on an apex of Hancock Road along the boundary of Inman and Back Valley. At an elevation of about 200 metres, to the south the view looks over rolling paddocks, Range Road and the southern edge of the Fleurieu. Patches of remnant vegetation surround the ruin, which was the region's churches from 1856 to 1910.

FKISM: Pioneer Congregational Church ruin, Inman Valley - July 2023

~ Short version of field note: 

This is one of two AudioMoth recordings that were made on Lady Bay reef over a week in late December 2022. The AudioMoths were deployed with the intention of observing the soundscape of two underwater locations and were configured to record for 1-minute at 10-minute intervals over a 24-hour period for the week.

A typical Sunday lunchtime soundscape in the seated area under the verandah of the Country Kitchen bakery on the main street of Myponga. With a cornish pasty consumed, I positioned the recorder beneath my beanie to record the sound of customers coming and going through the screen door, whilst a fellow seated patron periodically rustles a paper bag containing a disintegrating meat pie.

~ Short version of field note: 

Recorded at the entrance to the Nulcoowarra (Granite Island) causeway, as waves crash on the shore and seagulls jostle for dominance. People pass bay and a bell chimes in the distance - an indication that the horse-drawn carriage is about to depart and take passengers across to the island. Before its departure, snippets of conversation are heard.

FKISM: Granite Island causeway w/ horse-drawn carriage, Victor Harbor - July 2023

This audio is the air compressor for MOXIE pumping air on Mars. MOXIE was launched aboard NASA’s Perseverance rover to test a technology for extracting oxygen from the Red Planet’s carbon dioxide-rich atmosphere.

The foghorns of the Golden Gate bridge, recorded at the waters' edge at Fort Point on the southern end of the bridge. Recorded in some of the densest fog I've ever encountered - despite being directly overhead, the bridge and its towers were completely invisible. You'll also hear seawash on the nearby rocks, the occasional distant heavy vehicle, and three people who waited until the exact moment I started recording before deciding to have a nice chinwag. Hope it doesn't impair your enjoyment of a truly amazing sound too greatly.

Recorded Mid-October just on Sunrise at Toonumbar National Park in NSW,  Australia.
Recorded with a Sennheiser MKH 30/40 Rig and a Sound Devices 702 Recorder, converted to Stereo and Edited in Adobe Audition CS6.
The background noise is from a distant creek and wind, both reduced quite a bit using a low-cut filter.

Green Catbirds at Dawn - M/S Stereo Recording

A test using a short sample of the sound of a stone being thrown onto a frozen lake. I pitch shifted the original down 3 octaves to compare the signal in detail.

Original recording made on a Sony PCM-D50. Its not bad but ideally I need to make a recording with better mics.

"CITY STORM": A mini LP devoted to storm sounds captured in urban environments.

PT. 04: "Midtown Showers with Thunderclap and Birds"
-This piece begins with the remnants of rolling thunder from the last entry in City Storm, before opening up to a bustling Midtown street in the middle of a rain storm. Cars can be heard honking and passing by as the grumbles grow into a single, loud clap of thunder that nearly clipped in the recording. Once this subsides the focus is on layers of relaxing rain and springtime birds. Even with the bird calls, this still feels mostly nocturnal, or at least the kind of city presented in David Fincher's "Se7en" where its always raining and in some hazy in-between period that isn't day or night. 

This piece was built from three separate (recently unearthed) recordings captured in Detroit over the last few years. All audio has been maintained at HD 96 / 24 bit WAV files. Enjoy on good headphones.
